Using LLMs as Search engines really illustrates a fundamental misunderstanding what search engines are good for and why one would use them.
If I have to put in extra work to learn how to use it right and double check everything, why not just “do it the hard way?”
My video about how LLMs are not search engines has led to many, MANY comments telling me that I should be using Perplexity. Some insisting that Perplexity does not hallucinate. Out of a list of 26 papers it just provided me (in "Research" mode) 4 were real. FOUR. 85% hallucination rate.
This is wild. I just don’t understand how people trust the LLMs for research. I guess it’s not as bad if someone is actually going to verify everything (most people won’t), but even then, how much time would you spend chasing down those 21 papers that don’t exist?
