So many of them are convinced the places in the burbs have the best now (Commissary - which is good - is a great example). I get it. I wouldn’t want to be afraid to leave my home either. The difference is I don’t consume media that’s fear-based 24/7. I pity Memphis burbanites. I really do.
GoodnightJohnBoy (@jmiller477.bsky.social) reply parent
And I’ll say this: most of the folks in the burbs don’t want the Guard there because they don’t like Memphis. They want the Guard there because they believe that’s the only option left to control crime in Memphis. They’re afraid to leave their homes and go into the city.

Yes. My point is they’re inundated with information about crime at the local level. And crime is a problem. But Memphis is also following the Baltimore model, and will probably see similar results. It just takes time to fix.
GoodnightJohnBoy (@jmiller477.bsky.social) reply parent
They turn on WREG, WMC, or Fox13 and the first headline is a murder in Frayser. The second is a robbery at the Avenue in Collierville. The third is how someone on the school board/city council/public utility got caught with their hand in the cookie jar. It’s sad, but unsurprising.
GoodnightJohnBoy (@jmiller477.bsky.social) reply parent
The scary thing about Memphis is this - the people in the burbs want it. They want the Guard to come. Memphis has a crime problem - that’s for certain. The Guard would exacerbate the tensions in the city like fire to gasoline.
