In the US, most educators came into the job with an undergrad degree (licensing wasn't required to be attached to a MA or MEd), and many pay ladders cap progress until that graduate degree is in hand, so I, for example, am perpetually at the 14 years of service rung (I'm starting year 33).
Standard practice by the anti education folks here in the US is to cite the top of the pay ladder rate with all the benefits added in (cuz remember here we have health care via our employers, as well as retirement). Of course, the top of the ladder rate requires 2+ degrees and 25+ years of service.
I did notice that. I was primarily trumpet, but btwn needs to cover parts and 18 mos with braces, I did time on horn, marching bari, & trombone during MS & HS. Trumpet is what moved fwd into university.
