I appreciated the chance to talk with Kathryn Jezer-Morton for this article. It's unfortunate that we have to deal with Big Tech's messes everywhere, including in our own families, but given that, I'm glad for a chance to help people think this through. www.thecut.com/article/broo... >>

Screencap from linked article, reading: “These tools are designed to look like objective, all-knowing systems, and I think it’s important to get kids used to asking, ‘Who are the people who built this? Who said and wrote the original things that became the training data? Whose artwork was stolen by these companies to produce the training sets?’” said Bender. For kids too young to connect with those questions, Bender suggests parents focus on the environmental impact. “Every time you use a chatbot, you’re helping to build the case for the company to develop the next model and build the next data center. Data centers have to be cooled with massive amounts of clean water, and clean water usually means drinking water.” Whose drinking water will be diverted? That said, I wanted to provide a couple of corrections. When I problematize the term

Only an egomaniacal crackpot embittered by a lack of recognition from his superiors and obsessed with his own ambition would have tried something so asinine. And well, that was Lee in a nutshell. So no, Lee was a terrible general, in almost every way.

Then you look at his battlefield blunders, eg. Gettysburg and you wonder how his legend ever grew in the first place. But I'm sorry, the very idea of a northern campaign would have been funny if not for the 10's of thousands of dead and wounded. Such a senseless sacrifice, and that was 100% Lee.

Stand by this: www.politico.com/newsletters/...

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped? I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry. Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto. It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

when i think of Colbert, i think of an interview he gave to GQ when he first took over The Late Show, and had this to say about losing his father and brothers in a plane crash. www.gq.com/story/stephe...

“It was a very healthy reciprocal acceptance of suffering,” he said. “Which does not mean being defeated by suffering. Acceptance is not defeat. Acceptance is just awareness.” He smiled in anticipation of the callback: “ ‘You gotta learn to love the bomb,’ ” he said. “Boy, did I have a bomb when I was 10. That was quite an explosion. And I learned to love it. So that's why. Maybe, I don't know. That might be why you don't see me as someone angry and working out my demons onstage. It's that I love the thing that I most wish had not happened.” I love the thing that I most wish had not happened. I asked him if he could help me understand that better, and he described a letter from Tolkien in response to a priest who had questioned whether Tolkien's mythos was sufficiently doctrinaire, since it treated death not as a punishment for the sin of the fall but as a gift. “Tolkien says, in a letter back: ‘What punishments of God are not gifts?’ ” Colbert knocked his knuckles on the table. “ ‘What punishments of God are not gifts?’ ” he said again. His eyes were filled with tears. “So it would be ungrateful not to take everything with gratitude. It doesn't mean you want it. I can hold both of those ideas in my head.”

I've covered race for two decades. I knew the 2nd Trump Admin would be dangerous for civil rights. Yet the collapse of the federal civil rights architecture and national will to address racial inequality and work on integration is stunning. Here's my latest. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/27/m...

Open Source, AI, and the Global War on Fascism The author reflects on the trajectory of open source amidst the rise of geopolitical tensions and authoritarian regimes. Initially thriving as a collaborative movement, open source now faces threats from nation-state actors exploiting its communities.…

Wrote a follow-up on AI Native. When I wrote that open source ecosystems were about to become more important than ever, I meant that as a warning. If we want positive outcomes, we’ll have to get very serious very quickly about community-based governance for AI Native: osenetwork.com/2025/06/24/a...

AI Native and the Open Source Supply Chain I recently wrote 2 essays on the subject of AI Native Automation over on the AINT blog. The gist of them is simple: AI Native platforms are about to disrupt - and maybe disembowel - what we know today as devops AI Native platforms are about to…

I <3 this... I learned to keep my mouth shut and keep my head down growing up, and I have found that it makes me invisible at work. And I have a profound dislike - and distrust - of work hierarchies. It's a real career limiter... :)

AOC: “It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.”

The President's disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers. He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations. It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.

It’s an uphill struggle getting people to accept that Christians can be bad people. But the even harder truth that people urgently need to grasp in this time of Christofascism is that for some understandings of Christianity, to be a GOOD Christian is to be a BAD person. Denial makes things worse

Unironically the thing I love about this point, is that it's a great basis to start talking to y'all about the fact that most of the people in jail in the US are just as innocent as Khalil. Many are Black folk that have been arrested with *absolutely no basis*, but wait *over a year* to see a judge.

FT: #usmnt 1-0 Saudi Arabia. The U.S. was able to grind this one out, & now they are through to the quarterfinals with a game to spare. (Still need to secure top spot.) Richards the hero, for what he did at both ends of the field. It got a little testy towards the end, but the US emerged unscathed.

OK i’ve seen almost no media outlet pick up on the fact the Supreme Court ruling endorsed conversion therapy and opens a portal to the normalization of conversion therapy nationally so here’s a thread explaining how they did so, and why you should care (1/x)
