Pre-Trump Republicans were a quintessentially conservative party, in the sense that its voters understood themselves to be the beneficiaries of the system they were preserving. But in 2008, Republicans suddenly decided they were outsiders in their own country, and I'll give you one guess why.

I’m a MH clinician, and when someone is suicidal you make sure they have support and that they don’t have access to firearms. What does the big awful bill do? Takes away Medicaid coverage, making MH care less accessible. And it makes certain kinds of firearms more accessible. This is very bad.
