perhaps if your methodology puts lunar new year at the same level as pi day, a thing that only exists for coworkers to have something to be annoying about, your methodology is bad

Another similar chart to the one above but they’ve added in a ton of fake holidays and also lunar new year which is the most important holiday for like half the world’s population and has major economic and social significance and is here ranked near lefthanders day and 420

they made a graph showing that Columbus Day is “more real” than New Year’s Day

An utterly baffling chart that appears to map federal holidays on an axis of “realness” but that also uses trailing lines in a way that I don’t understand. Memorial Day, Juneteenth and Thanksgiving are the most real and New Year’s Day is the least??? Also Veterans Day is going diagonal and I couldn’t tell you why.

A fun (sorta) thing I learned working on this story was that the NYT blamed the 1911 chestnut blight on “general wickedness”, “sinfulness and extravagant living” in a story headlined “ALL CHESTNUT TREES HERE ARE DOOMED”

The chestnut blight or canker is still a great piece of wickedness in the tree world. Dr. W. A. Murrill, Assistant Director of the New York Botanical Garden, has just returned from a trip to Virginia, where he saw the spread of the dreaded thing. People outside New York, he says, are only now beginning to realize what a serious thing it is. There are a few people who write to the Botanical Garden to say that the real cause is the general wickedness of the people of the United States. It is a scourge for sinfulness and extravagant living, and private prayer or perhaps a grand religious revival might stay it. There are others who have other remedies. They recommend boring holes in the trees and filling them up with sulphur. Some say to fill the holes with rusty nails. •

“Don’t feel like you’re judging the trees,” said Sherlan Greaves, one of the New York City parks department staffers, “You’re doing this for the health of the tree.” “Good?” someone offered. “It’s definitely trying its best,” Greaves conceded. “It could be better. Between good and fair.” 😂💜

bad photo but the doors don’t align and the seats aren’t symmetrical across the aisle

is this not weird? I feel weird about it. Like someone put one of the doors on wrong and they just went with it?

ok so the times witnessed reporters receiving cash from Adams people three times at mayoral events and sat on it for over a month but couldn’t pass up a hot tip from a neonazi about Mamdani’s unsuccessful college application for long enough to check if the neonazi had already been identified

Five out of six Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in Gaza were civilians as of May, according to Israel's own military intelligence. "In Gaza we are talking about a campaign of targeted assassinations, really, rather than battles, and they are carried out with no concern for civilians.”

I love how small-time the Adams corruption scandals are. This is a city of 8m people with a budget over $115bn and they’re out here getting upgrades to business class on Turkish air and stuffing twenties in a bag of potato chips. It’s almost quaint?

It’s still scary to try to say no!
