🚨 Zarah Sultana confirms she has been frozen out of ‘Your Party’ — Hits out at “sexist boys’ club” — Accuses Corbyn statement of having “misrepresented the situation” — Calls for a meeting with Corbyn — Party is “more important than any one person”
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk) reply parent
I expect the momentum of Your Party’s flagrant incompetence will drive Sultana towards Polanski’s Greens. The rifts between her and the original Independent Alliance MPs, it would seem, are irreconcilable. Ideologically and strategically the ‘party’ is riven
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk)
All is not well in ‘Your Party’. Note the absence of Zarah Sultana’s name at the bottom of this statement

Reckless followed Carswell of course. But less meaningful as he wasn’t the first
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk)
No defection will surpass Carswell’s in its political meaning until the defector calls a by-election, and wins it. No competition until then

More bad news for No 10: The commons speaker has granted a Conservative request for a three-hour emergency debate on the Lord Mandelson debacle under Standing Order 24 — it will be the first such debate since January 2023 Badenoch statement 👇

Bill Cash is a similar profile to David Jones. Both 'Brexit Spartans' and longtime ERGers. Together, they led the "star chamber" of lawyers that scrutinised the Rwanda Bill on behalf of the ERG and the "five families". Also this from ex-Tory MP Marco Longhi:
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk) reply parent
Simon Clarke unlikely due to role at Onward. Can't rule out Mark Francois. Would be another frontbench defection + someone highly engaged in Tory factional politics. Like Kruger, he was an early and enthusiastic backer of Jenrick's 2024 candidacy
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk) reply parent
I see Sarah Dines and James Duddridge as possible candidates for ex-MP defections. They fit the prevalent trend as Boris Johnson acolytes
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk) reply parent
All else being equal, Suella Braverman would be a very likely candidate. But right now relations look a little complicated leftfootforward.org/2025/07/suel...
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk) reply parent
Miriam Cates, co-chair of the New Conservatives group alongside Kruger, is a very likely future defector This article - www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/09... - is effectively an endorsement of Kruger's defection

Lee Anderson, Reform UK MP for Ashfield, famously would have voted against the bill had Labour MPs not "giggled" at him www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

Of the eleven Conservative (mostly former) MPs who voted against the Sunak government's Rwanda Bill at third reading in January 2024, three have now defected to Reform Potentially some clues here as to who could be next to go?
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk) reply parent
That is the true 'crossover' point - a mainly psychological phenomenon There is a more material significance as well: Kruger's defection will expedite this realisation for other Tories Kruger's flight to Faragism is both a reflection of the Conservative Party's decline, and a harbinger of it
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk) reply parent
Tory MPs will have different measures as to when this 'point' arrives - it's a subjective assessment. There will be others for whom it is an ideological impossibility. But Kruger has made that judgement. As Tory 'intellectual' with thought leadership in the rump party, that's significant
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk)
I have written before about an inflection point in British politics: when Conservative MPs interpret Reform UK's continued rise and consumption of the incumbent opposition as, effectively, inevitable. At that point, the incentive structure realigns: pointing ambitious, able Tories into Farage's arms
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk) reply parent
A sign of the dam breaking? After a drip-drip of opportunistic-seeming ex-MP defections, this feels different. Kruger is seen as a party intellectual, relatively young and holds as safe a Tory seat as they come these days. And he declares: "The Conservative Party is over". Remarkable by any measure
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk) reply parent
Hard to overstate the damage this does to Badenoch. Just after her best week as party leader. That will be forgotten now Kruger was a prominent Tory: co-chair of the New Conservatives group, Johnson ally (a theme with Reform defectors), and campaign manager of Jenrick's 2024 leadership bid
Josh Self (@josh.politics.co.uk)
A significant defection. Danny Kruger, appointed by Badenoch to serve on the Tory frontbench, is Reform UK's latest MP

Neither straightforwardly logistical nor political. There is no signal: of ‘renewal’ or ‘change’. It reveals an absence of ideas at the upper echelons of the Conservative hierarchy — and direction. It looks both panicked and passive. Timid. None of the real ruthlessness required in LOTO on show

A weird reshuffle with little to no internal logic Neither rewarding allies nor exiling antagonists. No sign of new blood. Ministers with exposed records slotted into new briefs. Some deadweight has been shifted, still more retained. Limits Badenoch’s room for manoeuvre in the medium term 1/…
