It's a really cool technology -- no license necessary, just set it up and go -- and it's great to see someone in the media outside the (happily) geeky world of amateur radio taking notice.
That's going to be important information to know if people start setting up their own installations for emergency purposes. Or anywhere else where there will be dense populations using it. You get a whole small town cleaning up after a tornado, you need to know how to keep the frequencies open.
For example, it's been trial and error at the past couple of Dayton HamFests -- as all things amateur radio are -- trying to figure out how to make all these hundreds upon hundreds of Meshtastic nodes talk to each other without completely overwhelming the network! But they worked it out.
It's been big in the ham radio community for the past year or so, and they've really been the ones to learn and explain the ins and outs of it. Credit goes to them for pioneering its use.
