This has always been the problem with the Alien series, the movies dont work if you dont have stupid motherfuckers. Its a real fail point for lots of monster movies, tbh. Except tremors. Tremors is the perfect monster flick. Everybody in tremors is smart and it *makes* the movie work.

I saw this as a kid and it blew my mind --it's postmodern, metatextual. There used to be stuff like this on network TV. People complained about the lowest common denominator aspect of the business, and they were right to, but the format also regularly allowed stuff like this, which is brilliant.

In fact, Los Angeles has already launched unarmed response to mental health incidents. It's been hugely successful. Barely 4% of calls require police backup. The alternative is already here. We just need to scale it up.

My kid had a 6th grade film production class and the teacher offers the "Hooptober" challenge (31 horrors/31 days) but expands it to genre generally. We hit a bunch of classic Universal monsters and she did the Scary Movie spoofs and Tremors too. Night of the Living Dead would be a good next step.
