✍️ New article: "How Wolbachia bacteria could help us tackle some of the world’s most neglected tropical diseases"

A data visualization presents findings from a randomized control trial in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, analyzing the impact of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes on dengue fever. The top section shows a bar graph comparing the number of new dengue infections: in areas with no treatment, there were 310 cases, while areas with Wolbachia treatment had 67 cases, indicating a 77% reduction in new infections. The bottom portion depicts another bar graph comparing hospitalizations due to dengue: there were 102 hospitalizations in areas without treatment and only 13 in treated areas, demonstrating an 86% reduction in hospitalizations. The background provides context, stating that Wolbachia is a natural bacterium found in many insects, and the note emphasizes its role in reducing dengue transmission. The data source is referenced as a 2021 study by Utarini et al., and the information is from Our World in Data, licensed under CC-BY by the author Hannah Ritchie.

Just a reminder before the “big announcement” today. Autism was discovered in 1911 and the modern definition of Autism came in 1943. Tylenol wasn’t widely used until the 1950s. Anyone trying to tell you that Tylenol causes Autism isn’t someone that should be taken seriously.

The word “autism” was first used to describe behavioral differences in children in 1911 but autism has been documented using available records going back to the 1700s (definitively) and further. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, paracetamol) was discovered in 1878 and first sold in the United States in 1950.

Human CTSZ variants are associated with TB severity, and CTSZ is present at the host-pathogen interface within human pulmonary Mtb granulomas. Top left: A manually annotated UMAP generated by unsupervised clustering of data from single-cell mRNA-Seq of human biopsy tissue, containing Mtb granulomas from three patients with TB. Top right: Analysis of normalized expression values reveals that CTSZ is specifically induced in granuloma macrophages, particularly in lipid-associated macrophages. Bottom: Brightfield (BF) images and immunofluorescent staining of CTSZ and CD68 within a granuloma biopsy from an individual with pulmonary TB. Just a heads up. I was able to schedule my COVID vaccine appointment. Online it will ask “do you have a condition that puts you at high risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19 virus.” Click yes and it will allow you to schedule an appointment. No questions asked. No proof required. Pass it on.

A friendly reminder that the NIH Public Access Policy IS NOT “you must publish open access” but rather “you must ensure your copy of your paper is deposited into PubMed Central.” Yes, it is very confusing. Yes, you should be able to do that deposit yourself without paying anything to a journal.
