You don’t need outside experts to check what Jack Straw and Policy Exchange are claiming here. You can just read the public text of the Good Friday Agreement to see it relies upon ECHR membership. If the UK leaves, the agreement either needs renegotiating, or it’s been breached. It’s that simple.

I could seen a Green/Your Party pact happening but only on a local level. Leaders don't actually have the power to implement national pacts in the Greens. So there could simply be hundreds of quite different agreements/disagreements by seat - a case by case arrangement. Still messy/unpredictable ofc

It's quite noticeable IMO that despite being co-leader he's had such an incredibly low profile, even during this leadership contest. Will be interesting to see how many quiet backers he and Chowns have ha though or if the Greens are fully (and not pejoratively) leftist by and large now

A 2029 election with the Greens and Corbyn's party running against each other in hundreds of seats, Reform polling strongly, and little electoral gap between Tories, Labour and Lib Dems could get very messy under FPTP indeed.

It's the Green Party leadership announcement tomorrow. Whoever wins it's going to be interesting Polanski: prospect of a left-wing alliance with the new Corbyn party. Or a much-divided left-of-Labour vote Chowns/Ramsay: Greens will be arguably closer to Lib Dems, but more distinct from Your Party

A Labour Party spokesperson responds to Reform UK's press conference this AM:

“When Reform get into power in local councils they make things worse for local residents, not better: threatening to hike council tax on low income families in Durham, increasing parking charges in Lancashire, and even banning the council from speaking to its local newspaper in Nottinghamshire. They simply can’t be trusted. “Reform have no credible plan for Britain. Over and over again their answer is “don’t know” when asked how they’d change things. And when they do put forward a plan, it too often falls apart under basic scrutiny. They’re all anger, and no answers. “Only this Labour Government is delivering the national renewal our country needs through our Plan for Change, making sure local public services are there for people when they need them and working people keep more of their hard-earned money.”

I've just learned that (Reform-run) Durham County Council have rejected a resident's request for anonymity in reporting this complaint against Darren Grimes. Resident's response to the council below: bylinetimes.com/2025/08/29/r...

As indicated below, I think it’s a real shame that a resident of Durham County can’t confidentially bring to the Council’s attention when one of its members has potentially breached one of its own policies. I’m left with the impression that it’s a means of limiting the number of complaints. If, as you say, “Members subject to a complaint have a right to know who has made the complaint”, that right isn’t expressed in your procedure, nor in ECHR Article 6. The closest your procedure comes to that is “The Hearing Panel has a duty to act fairly and in line with the rules of natural justice.”. I suspect that you’d struggle to explain why revealing a complainant’s name affects fairness or justice. In this case, the fairness would come simply from addressing the points in the complaint and considering whether there had been a breach of the Code of Conduct. The member in question has chosen to become a Member and, as a consequence, forfeits some aspects of his confidentiality – especially given the way he makes public pronouncements via social media. As a private individual, I have not. As you’ve asked me for detailed analyses of why I think the Member has breached your policies, perhaps you could take a moment to explain more fully how revealing my identity will materially aid natural justice and fairness. Can you also please give me some clarity on the following from your procedure: “We will not withhold your identity, or a summary or the details of your complaint, unless you have exceptional reasons why we should do so”. What sorts of things might constitute “exceptional reasons”? At a time when Reform politicians’ social media posts can lead to followers advocating the burning of hotels, how exceptional does it need to be? Just to be clear, I’m not expecting you to reverse your decision, I simply want to know how you’ve made it.

Reform-led Durham Council are removing some England flags. I don't imagine this will make GB News or one of Darren Grimes' hysterical videos...

Durham County Council @DurhamCouncil We have noted a recent increase in the display of flags – particularly the St George’s Cross and the Union Flag – on street lighting columns across the county, as well as other displays such as painting of additional markings on the road surface including roundabouts and zebra crossings. While we understand and respect the community’s desire to express national pride, celebration, or remembrance, it is important to ensure such expressions do not compromise public safety. A risk-based approach is being applied to this practice. While we are aware of some flags being taken down by third parties, we will initially only remove flags and decorations where they: pose a danger to highway users; obstruct visibility for drivers or pedestrians; or are poorly secured or loose, increasing the risk of falling. Yesterday we were left with no choice but to remove bunting across a road at New Brancepeth, following a risk assessment. The rope involved was so strong that, had a high-sided vehicle driven into it, the poles it was attached to could have been pulled down. Our approach reflects our commitment to balancing community expression with public safety, practical resource management, and proportionality in our operations.

They're in the insanely expensive R&D phase. I think some people will get burnt but there will be firms making a lot of money out of it eventually. But yep, it's currently the pure-chaotic scramble part of the story, and v hard to guess which bets will pay off.

Hard to say. I'd like to think people take outputs with a large pinch of salt. The problem is almost the opposite though, that no one ends up trusting anything anymore. E.g. AI image creators getting so good no one trusts a single photo again. No one trusting that an email came from a human, etc etc

(Mollick is very much a glass-two-thirds-full proselytiser when it comes to AI, so the warning in there is note-worthy IMO)

Individual requests are getting cheaper to run, but the quantity of them is expanding pretty much exponentially. Overall yep the cost is still huge!

Most of them, I'd guess. They mostly come with that caveat anyway. Doesn't change the fact that people are now using them en masse for an increasing range of tasks. Everyone should be paying attention

Some very powerful Large Language Models are being released. Many of them are now being opened up for free. About a billion people are already regularly using LLMs like ChatGPT according to estimates. Things are about to change even faster in work, education, democracy and yep, misinformation...

Hmm. A pub in Bath appears to be advertising for a job paying below minimum wage - seemingly as it's cash in hand. I'm sure whoever gets it won't mind losing their NI pension entitlements! (I've reached out to the pub to see what's going on...) Via Reddit:

Politico: "The Conservative-run council argued housing asylum seekers is not 'more important' than local concerns, and that protests in Epping made housing asylum seekers in the hotel 'intolerable.'" The Govt says (in court) there's no evidence crime is higher in areas hosting asylum seekers.

Leader of the House of Commons, Lucy Powell: “By any measure, this is a bumper first parliamentary session delivering on the Government’s Plan for Change. No new incoming Government has set out such an ambitious legislative programme in its first year, that delivers for working people." Rest here:

Leader of the House of Commons, Lucy Powell, said: “By any measure, this is a bumper first parliamentary session delivering on the Government’s Plan for Change. No new incoming Government has set out such an ambitious legislative programme in its first year, that delivers for working people. “We said we would tackle the cost of living crisis, put power and opportunity back into the hands of people and take on the vested interests holding us back - and that’s what we are doing. This Autumn is going to be a busy term for parliamentarians. “Setting up GB energy, stopping water bosses bonuses, new rights for workers and renters, public ownership of rail, better buses, protecting local football clubs, saving British steel, planning reform for new homes, new police powers to tackle anti social behaviour and strengthening our borders, are just some of the real change we’re delivering so far.” The Government has so far successfully delivered 24 bills to Royal Assent, and introduced more bills than it announced in the King’s Speech last year, making a real difference to people’s lives:
