Hivemind, anyone know any Leeds/Yorkshire based comic writers? It's for a fantastic project that the British Library has been working on with care experienced and looked after children in Leeds, making a comic about their experiences. I would love to get some people down to support the launch.

The truth about asylum hotels

post by martin smith on facebook. Two years ago I stayed two nights, by accident, in a former hotel in the process of converting to an asylum hostel. Heres my story and what I learned: I was needed on a job with work at a site just outside Coventry at very short notice. I googled the nearest hotel to the site and booked it online. On arrival at 10pm the car park was almost empty apart from a few works vans for a local building firm and needed weeding. There was one person on reception and having waited on my own in the lobby for 20 minutes asked me if I was sure I had the right hotel and explained it had just converted its use to a hostel. She explained the situation and told me this was her last night as hotel staff had been fired and replaced with a skeleton crew on minimum wage. I decided to stay even though all the hotel facilities were long closed down including the bar, the kitchen and even the vending machines and lifts. They offered breakfast in a private room in the morning at 7am only and advised me not to speak to other residents. I did not obey this instruction o the corner shop on their behalf to buy cigarettes and Coke with their pocket money of at the time around £2 a day. * This was a former hotel which had been converted into a hostel for asylum seekers. I was the last paying guest and they shouldnt have taken my booking or arranged alternative accommodation once I turned up. * Statistically three quarters of the people I shared the hostel/hotel with will have been approved for UK residency by now, including, I hope, the former British soldier. * Not a single resident of the hostel/hotel was illegal in any way So if far right propoganda about reads: What I learned: * Several hundred old and young men, women and a handful of children were housed sometimes in groups of 4 to 6 in former double hotel rooms. * Cleaning/airing of my room had not happened for several weeks * There was no clean bed linen or housekeeping service * The windows were badly in need of cleaning and there were tiles loose in the bathroom, rusty taps and wallpaper starting to peel * The hotel smelled very strongly of tobacco smoke leading me to suspect the hotel standard smoke alarms had been disabled * The breakfast was truly poor quality and without choice over contents or dietary options. * Many residents were too traumatised and terrified to talk, avoided me particularly and stayed in their crowded rooms 23 hours a day * Many I talked with were from Somalia or Afghanistan - including at least one who had been a former British Army interpreter. * A few asked me to go to the corner shop on their behalf to buy cigarettes and Coke with their pocket money of at the time around £2 a day. * Not a single resident of the hostel/hotel was illegal in any way So if far right propoganda about

I figured out why I hate the word "employable". We don't use it to describe employers, only (would be) employees. To be employable is to conform to a shifting set of expectations about your core competencies. More importantly, can you "fit" into arbitrary work cultures? Employable means malleable.

Book introductions, day by day. My current contemporary fantasy series is inspired by British myth & folklore. Dan Mackmain is mostly human, but he's a dryad's son, so the Green Man sends him to solve problems when the mundane and the uncanny collide. The Green Man's Heir is the first book. #Booksky

Cover art shows a carved wooden face made from oak leaves. The mysterious Green Man of myth. Emerald light gleams deep in the empty eye sockets. Cover copy reads: A hundred years ago, a man with a secret could travel a few hundred miles and give himself a new name and life story. No one would be any the wiser, as long as he didn’t give anyone a reason to start asking questions. These days, that’s not so easy, with everyone on social media, and CCTV on every street corner. So Daniel Mackmain keeps his head down and keeps himself to himself. But now a girl has been murdered and the Derbyshire police are taking a closer look at a loner who travels from place to place, picking up work as he goes. Worse, Dan realises the murder involves the hidden world he was born into. When no one else can see the truth, who will see justice done? A modern fantasy rooted in the ancient myths and folklore of the British Isles. Available in ebook, paperback, hardback and audiobook wizardstowerpress.com julietemckenna.com

It clearly happens in all sorts of areas and it's usually the "lower levels" that get the brunt. Higher ups know how much their time is worth I mean, we all know sys admins don't like devs but even I get upset when users assume it'll take moments to add some code to make a new feature possible

Contact Name book club Email bookclub@example.org Subject not your books, never your books. Your descent over the last 15 years into the most lunatic recesses of the loony left, and most notably yours insitance that gay and autistic children should be free to sterilise themselves, fills me with horror and profound relief you'll never have children. People disagreeing with you is not proof you're right.

It's #BookQW and Eilert is showing Garnas a whole new world. #BookQuoteWednesday tinyurl.com/WizDuos1

As if to underscore my point, the roiling orange mass was briefly lit by lightning, flowering somewhere deep and hostile. It was scores of levels down from us, distant and toy-like. The clouds' colour gradually changed to match the sky the closer to horizontal you looked. Shirin looked a little impatient; probably an affectation. She was not immune to scenes of grandeur. Hard to appreciate them once you know the Cathedral better, though. I’m ashamed it took me so long. Garnas hadn’t had the shine taken off yet. I wanted to let him enjoy it. It’s the only place outside the interstice with no horizon.

If that sounds corrupt, don't worry. The council is the one paying McDonalds, so if McDonalds recommend some food the council don't want to pay for, they can send the report back and McDonalds will rewrite it to remove that item.

Did you know the council has a company it hires to tell you what food you should eat? The company assesses you, recommends what you should eat, and then that is the food that will be available to you from now on. The company is McDonalds.
