Fraser Ellard was also called up. Mike Clevinger is not among the initial moves, contrary to what I heard in Nashville. Based on the reaction, many may not regret the error, but I do.
James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
White Sox added Fraser Ellard and Bryan Ramos from Triple-A Charlotte as rosters expand. Ellard is expected to start.
James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
Down in Nashville, @soxmachine.com hears that Mike Clevinger is being called up to the White Sox. I was told he’s not starting, fwiw.
James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
Colson Montgomery now has a "modified" torpedo bat that he feels is more modeled to his swing than previous versions, giving him more meat at the end of his barrel than a typical torpedo. Yes, of course he homered with it. soxmachine.com/2025/08/whit...

White Sox beat the Yankees, 3-2 An eighth inning Lenyn Sosa solo shot off old friend Tim Hill (depicted in attached image) provided the difference to avoid a four-game sweep. Sox are 49-88

Aaron Civale was claimed off waivers by the Cubs, so the White Sox will need a new starter for tomorrow in Minnesota. Maybe it will be Bryse Wilson, since the Sox purchased his contract from Charlotte.

And then @jrfegan.soxmachine.com tried to make sense of the chasm between Grant Taylor's ERA and FIP.
James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
Grant Taylor does too many physically freaky things to not be a good reliever pretty soon. But he hasn’t been one yet, and some of the freaky elements have been trickier to convert into production than expected. soxmachine.com/2025/08/gran...

White Sox lose to the Yankees, 5-3 in 11 innings Shane Smith wrapped up a strong August and left his team a big, late-game hit away from a cathartic victory. They never got it, and went 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Sox are 48-88, losers of five-straight and 40 games under .500
James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
Shane Smith: 6.1 IP. 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 2 HR, 58 of 97 pitches for strikes, with 29 called strikes/whiffs. He's looked more like the guy who made the All-Star team as the month of August has gone on: 2.67 ERA in 33.2 IP with 31 K.
James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
Carlos Rodón got his 15th win so that usually means the White Sox are rolling. I won't be checking to see if that's accurate. soxmachine.com/2025/08/yank...

White Sox lose to the Yankees, 10-2 The Sox got waxed for the third-straight night despite out-hitting the Yankees 12-7. Bad things happen when you walk a zillion dudes. Sox are 48-87.

Will Venable said Vargas avoided significant injury. They’re going to at least see if he can return in 10 days. It will depend on how he feels swinging the bat when he’s cleared to ramp up activity.

Yoendrys Gómez Plinko'd his way from the top to the bottom of Major League Baseball franchises, but while the White Sox are among three teams to DFA him this year, they had the time and willingness to help him expand his offerings, @jrfegan.soxmachine.com writes.
James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
Yoendrys Gómez has experience a career's worth of disappointment and hopelessness in a single season, so naturally the White Sox have proven to be the ideal home for him as he rebounds with an expanded arsenal. soxmachine.com/2025/08/afte...

White Sox lose to the Yankees, 10-4 What chance the Sox had to restrain the Yankee offense was immolated by three fielding errors, one of which led to Miguel Vargas leaving with a scary-looking injury. Sox are 48-86, and have played very bad baseball on back-to-back nights.
James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
White Sox say Miguel Vargas departed the game with a left wrist contusion, and "will undergo further testing tomorrow." His wrist was bent back upon colliding with Aaron Judge, as he reached into the baseline while pursuing an errant throw. Judge, I can confirm, is a very large man.
James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
Davis Martin went 3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 2 HR, 50 of 81 pitches for strikes, with 23 called strikes/whiffs. He's going to be cranky about those walks. His ERA hopped up to 4.03.

White Sox lose to the Royals, 12-1 Personally wondering if I have seriously underestimated Luis Robert Jr.'s value to this team. Korey Lee pitched two innings. Sox are 48-85. They went 3-10 against the Royals this season, a two win improvement from last year.
James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
Aaron Civale: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, BB, 4 K, HR, 59 of 86 pitches for strikes, 21 called strikes/whiffs. He threw four scoreless innings on 60 pitches. Then he couldn't escape the fifth. Big innings have been an issue. Civale's ERA is 5.26 on the year.

White Sox lose to the Royals, 5-4 Martín Pérez threw seven scoreless innings. Four Sox reliever combined for the final six outs, and allowed five runs on eight hits in the process of securing them. Colson Montgomery homered again. Sox are 48-84.
James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
Is Martín Pérez elite? 7 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K, 55 of 85 pitches for strikes with 27 called strikes/whiffs lowers his ERA to 2.02 on the season. He was worried his career was over in April. It would appear it is not.

James Fegan (@jrfegan.soxmachine.com)
Shane Smith: (career-high) 7 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 54 of 80 pitches for strikes, with 24 called strikes/whiffs. He threw nearly 75% fastballs and allowed a single baserunner. His ERA is back down to 3.87 on the season. The Royals have largely looked ready for bed since 6:40pm.
