My answer here- I'm sure I left some things out, but it's meant to just be 3 to 4 informal sentences in an intro discussion board, so I can't really be like, "in a perfect world, people wouldn't have to be afraid to give birth because their home and hospitals are being bombed" by the IDF or Russia

A screenshot of an answer I left in response to an introduction post on Blackboard this morning in one of my new classes. It is white text on a black background, reading: Optimal maternal and child health, to me, would look like global, equitable access. Accessible care throughout the prenatal, birth, and postnatal period, and following through early childhood. To be truly optimal in my opinion, maternal and child health would be part of well-rounded efforts to meet healthcare needs throughout all life stages, meaning adequate nutrition, education, family planning education, social support programs, parental leave and childcare, safety and preventive care. Social and policy barriers would be minimized and evidence-based best practices in place; international funding to support robust, long-term programs globally to minimize preventable deaths that are established in a way they cannot be suddenly withdrawn; access and education for nutrition, vaccines, disease prevention, safety, and social support programs (culturally-appropriate) following the entire lifespan from one generation to the next. Essentially, a global shift in prioritizing equity and autonomy in access to care and supportive

The loss of planetary albedo via these cloud decks and glaciers is a major weakness in our fight against global warming. Albedo is a measure of the percentage of sunlight that a surface reflects away- the amount of sunlight snow reflects is the common example for this.

Something VERY interesting to me is how these patterns of upwelling feedback contribute to things like the "formation of stratus cloud decks above cool SSTs that block solar radiation" (Ramesh, Boos 2025). We *WANT* to reflect that radiation back away from the planet. Badly.

What does this annual pattern of upwelling even do in our oceans? The waters are nutrient-rich, support diverse ecosystems, forming some of the world’s most lucrative fisheries; affects tropical climate w strong east-west sea surface temperatures (SSTs). journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal...

My understanding is a militant "just read" approach doesn't address underlying comprehension issues or other language issues- which often is broadly assumed to go ignored in homeschooling stereotypes. This parent *may* be addressing those needs, we don't know. What evidence would change your mind?

Sometimes people appreciate a more pedestrian approach 🥰 It interests me how, with a lot of evidence available in education and literacy, whether it's a scholarly article, anecdotal or not, you still say this doesn't change x,y,z for you.

Hyperlexia is often associated w/ autistic children, but being autistic is not a requirement for diagnosis. Obviously this doesn't apply to every child, but again, the point is, an average is based on a collective range of differing abilities. It's a fascinating issue- hyperlexics struggle later on.

This parent does not mention any specific learning disabilities, but fwiw, some early readers are experiencing learning and developmental difficulties that are masked by what appears to be their "incredible" natural reading ability at an early age. doi.org/10.1016/j.ne...

This can look like many different learning opportunities, but here being read aloud to and listening to audio books would be the ideal example; both are recognized as valuable learning experiences regardless of the setting. www.aft.org/ae/spring200...

Reading comprehension depends heavily on oral language development. Considering the idea of how children (and adults) have different learning styles and those are sometimes harder to meet in a large classroom, the child in reference learning at home *may* be developing language skills in other ways:

A screenshot: • Language continues to develop during the primary years. However, the gap between children with advanced language and children with restricted language grows wider during the elementary years. By grade 3, advanced children's comprehension is equivalent to that of average children in grade 4, while slower-progressing children are similar to average 2nd-graders or even younger children. Some of this difference is attributable to cumulative vocabulary deficits in less advanced children.

Do all infants learn to walk at exactly the same age, learn to speak at exactly the same age? No- there are variations of normalcy, ranges of when children reach milestones. "Simple" books of a few pages each is not always what people think of as a chapter book. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

🧵Labor Day is a chance to remember all unions have done for America. "The first labor union in the United States was the the Federal Society of Journeymen Cordwainers (leather workers and cobblers), founded in 1794." The union crumbled in 1806, when owners won a lawsuit charging workers with..1/

I'm still betting on something like a Bell's Palsy. Much less emergent than a stroke, appears like a stroke to people at first glance (a facial droop and paralysis both create a slurred-like speech pattern, imagine having a very loose cheek). ✨What matters is it would be a huge blow to his ego.✨

I wondered if he might just have something like Bell's Palsy (or even just a fall and a bruise on his face). Common enough in his age group and enough to cause alarm in a large portion of people- they would assume a stroke- and especially damaging to his ego and he wouldn't allow for that.

But she said "this was the first election in all my time voting for every election I have ever left the box for the president blank". If I had to guess she obviously didn't like Trump and fell for the bs about Harris being "unqualified".

and my dad's mom, the gram I live with who is older, doesn't quite follow the conversation as well when we get into a discussion about my mother and how it relates to broader political issues. It's like it's "too big" of a world for her when we get into that. And I wasn't up for opening that lid lol

No- because I didn't press it (I was caught off-guard) and it was in the middle of a more broad and complicated conversation with both grandmothers about my mother and her problematic behavior lately and her even more problematic boyfriend. She's been on a roll lately with conspiracies and things-
