Just spent a week in Paris. The most enjoyable big city experience I've EVER had. Cars are given as little room as possible. Parks EVERYWHERE and bikes are treated as equal users of the road. Never felt threatened by a car ONCE. The tree canopy is so impressive. I was blown away in every way.

Gentrification is what we call it when demand exceeds supply. It is not caused by bike lanes. The answer is not to suppress demand by enshittifying cities, or to justify endangering & killing people outside of cars as a rent control mechanism, but to increase supply.

The idea that bike lanes cause gentrification is funny because it suggests that they’re a desirable amenity that people will pay a lot of money to live near. Maybe build bike lanes in more places so they’re not as rare? (Also build more housing!)

Well, we should consider new laws, or maybe enforce the ones we have, accounting for the safety of ALL road users. A off duty NYPD officer was killed in a crash this week on the BQE. Maybe the problem is bigger than buses 🤷‍♀️

I’m in the Blue Mountain Village, which is a pedestrian-only neighbourhood with plenty of places to live, eat, and shop, and plenty of parking too—just outside of where people actually do stuff. This is a tourist novelty here, but shouldn’t it just be the default for all cities? It’s way better.

Lived in several concrete apart and concrete doesn't fix this on it's own. I think the sensible way to handle this is to have fairly strict requirements on sound transmission between apartments, and then let the developer select the best construction technique.

As I argue in my new book, decarbonization is about asset revaluation: fossil asset owners have waaaay more $$ and power than green asset owners. So climate policy should focus on how to re-orient the flow of capital in the economy, not mitigate tons of emissions. press.princeton.edu/books/ebook/...

What people don't yet understand — what I am just coming to understand — is that Trump is not acting irrationally on climate & energy to "own the libs." Trump (and the GOP) are protecting the trillions of assets held by their fossil-fuel cronies, which would be utterly devalued if we decarbonized.
