He's clearly waiting until people are actually focused on the election, which is October. The far left has been pulling their hair out over a nothingburger.

You're reading way too much into it. He's running against a corrupt mayor and morally corrupt former governor. All he has to do is not look like a bigger asshole than them. NYC is not a bellweather.

Americans have this unique characteristic where they hate a certain group but desire to be it one day. Many Americans may hate the rich, but they desire to make that lifestyle theirs one day at the same time.
ellie lockhart (she/they) (@eleanor.lockhart.contact) reposted reply parent
people have this weird assumption that it's a social consensus that the rich are bad, when we know that most Americans think the rich earned their share and just would like the chance to share in it the illusion that everyone is a little Marxist manufactured over the last decade is *weird*

I truly think Mamdani is going to hit the roadblock that has been common for leftist mayors. A city council and NYPD who are not to the left where he is. His ideas are shiny toys for voters, but they don't have a legit chance of being implemented without severe pushback.

it just drives me up the wall that, even as someone who is *from* where the rural working class is from, telling people that, no, these folks *actually are bigots*, can get reframed as *me* being intolerant because it feels nicer to believe that no, they're just waiting for Bernie 2.0
Kaiba (@kdh52.bsky.social) reply parent
No, it's not. Guarantee when Mamdani gets in office, he won't be able to do any of the things he's running on, and the shine will soon come off. He's floating around a consistent 40-45% for the general election.

What's going on with Dayton? Visted there a couple of times when my cousin used to live there. There are a lot of cities and towns that would benefit greatly from immigrant skilled workers like Springfield, but their racism may very prevent that.

Democrats and the left have never *not* been in favor of helping rural areas. The rural areas don't want things to get better, they want LGBT people to go away and women to be subservient to men and brown people to not be in the country. We gave them expanded Medicaid and broadband and they did this
Kaiba (@kdh52.bsky.social)
I always think back to Springfield, OH, as the biggest example of this. Springfield and the rural areas that surround it were declining economically for years. The town experienced a revival thanks to skilled Haitian immigrants. Look at how they were treated after having racist lies dumped on them.

The left has this false sense that if Dems offered everything to rural America, they would become left-wing. Rural America has received more money than cities by a wide margin. Obama's ACA gave many healthcare for the first time. Trump said he would cut it. They voted for him in record numbers.
Kaiba (@kdh52.bsky.social) reply parent
It's a poll, and first of all, my two points are not mutually exclusive to each other. Obama is the living president with the highest approval. Voters voted for a man who took the healthcare Obama gave them. There is nothing about my second statement that's makes the first one untrue or vice versa.

Agreed! However, Bernie, like Trump, has never offered up any realistic option that doesn't hurt the U.S. economy in the process. To be fair, Americans are always iffy of the border. Many voted for Trump for that reason, yet now dislike his actions, despite him doing what he said he would do.
