I love the Xenogenesis series but prefer the Patternist series — but maybe only because Wild Seed is my favorite of her books? POTS is def a rough read right now. Her prescience is terrifying.

…but it was also — bizarrely! — written out of order. So it’s truly strange to rec! That said, I loved it all (even the parts I hated, if that makes sense). But if Parable of The Sower keeps this energy through to the end it would def be my rec.
I love Butler. She’s one of my favorite authors. Wild Seed is probably my favorite novel of hers I’ve read so far (and it was my first) but it IS a little hard to recommend that book/series as a first read — not only does the series vacillate wildly in a very interesting but non-traditional way…1/2

What scares people (and how, and how much) are so hard to pin down it would be hard for me to answer. But I do think watching Barbarian might indeed be your best bet to get a feel?
Barbarian and Weapons are very different films, but they do share some big commonalities in how he builds (and gives away) tension, they’re also set in very sort of average feeling suburban environments that are terrifying despite their mundanity.
I agree. But also, the more I think about it, the more I become fascinated by this idea of fairy tales. The origin of fairy tales were made up stories to explain real world horrors… kinda like a bunch of kids disappearing from a town and it all getting blamed on a witch. There’s so much here.

Weapons is excellent. I don’t know if I’ve seen a modern horror director w bigger balls than Cregger. He is unafraid to give away all the tension he creates, confident he can get it back w a snap of his fingers. And he does. Every time. Between this & Barbarian I can’t wait to see what he does next.
