So, I grew up a Republican. I voted Republican for years. The party moved away from me. The Tea Party is when I finally gave up on them. Am I still a Republican? Times change. People change.

Yep no guarantees it will stay the way it is. It will depend on the finances. Porn and other vices can generate a lot of revenue. It's always a balancing act. Will an increase in porn content drive off more $$$ than it brings in? We'll all know when the scale tips in favor of the vices ...

Make the population sick, but not too sick. They want compliant workers, not intelligent workers with spare time (because they're healthy) to consider how bad off they are. If they're not spending all their time worrying about staying alive, workers may decide to rise up against the overlords.
Ken Cline (@kencline.me) reply parent
They don't want anyone who can - with authority - contradict what they're saying. They want to be able to lie to people's faces with impunity. If you control the information people consume, you control the people.

This is all part of the strategy to keep the workforce just "healthy enough" but not "too healthy." When a population can focus on higher value activities (as opposed to basic survival,) they have time to consider their station and realize that they're being shit upon by their overlords.

@sea-level no. Mathematics is a byproduct of intelligence. Not all intelligent people are mathematicians. The same for medicine, astronomy, cooking, chemistry, etc. They each take intelligence. Not everyone can heal, use a sextant, be a chef, or understand a chemical reaction.
