With the corporate spoxes it often sounds like they're filling out forms: Who's asking, what's their outlet, what's their deadline, see if you can get them to say who their sources are, is this going to make us look bad and if so how bad.

Authorities announced the suspect was in custody soon after I posted this but I think the point still stands; both he and Mangione were (reportedly) ID'd by regular people who recognized them from photos the FBI put out.
This country has so many cameras available to law enforcement and so much data to try to match footage with, yet we keep seeing it's currently nowhere near as useful as the agency would like in big manhunts.

I guess my point is that just like social media, the very act of using any LLM that you aren't hosting is inviting surveillance on your every interaction with it.
Folks are treating this is a big new step OpenAI is taking. But all LLMs were already constantly using people's chats with them for training. They're all subpoenable. They have safety measures to flag genuinely worrisome behavior — advice for how to shoot a school, CSAM — that will surely misfire.
Also, and I note this in my story, Anthropic is supposed to be the responsible company among the big frontier LLM developers!! And this still went undetected for three months!!!!
