No experience with that. I can say with DCC I am more likely to run the non sound locomotives over the sound. I think most people are like that too. So you only need one or two DCC with sound. Rest just DCC. Honestly, the noise can drive you a bit mad sometimes.
If you don't want sound it is a good bit cheaper than that. You can buy a used locomotive and do the install yourself with a basic Digitrax DCC chip for a pretty reasonable price.
