“The critics said his writing was clumsy, ungrammatical, repetitive and repetitive.” Yes, my friends, on the day a new Dan Brown ‘book’ hits the shops, it’s time to remind ourselves of the work of renowned journalist Michael Deacon of British newspaper The Daily Telegraph... archive.ph/44MCP

Renowned author Dan Brown got out of his luxurious four-poster bed in his expensive $10 million house and paced the bedroom, using the feet located at the ends of his two legs to propel him forwards. He knew he shouldn’t care what a few jealous critics thought. His new book Inferno was coming out on Tuesday, and the 480-page hardback published by Doubleday with a recommended US retail price of $29.95 was sure to be a hit. Wasn’t it?

Today is the ten year anniversary of my proudest ever achievement in publishing, RUSHOMON: the time I got both a Rush Hour Crush and a Good Deed printed on the same page of the UK Metro, both of which told a single, horrifying, story from two different angles. It's been all downhill ever since.

Letter to METRO's Rush Hour Crush section, September 9, 2015. GORGEOUS redhead I tangled with whole getting off the Overground at Highbury & Islington. Youi were so sweet and calm about our encounter, I wouldn't mind getting close to you in more normal circumstances. - Guy Who Screamed After His Eat Got Caught On Your Coat Buttons Letter to Good Deed Feed section of the METRO, Sep 9, 2015. This poem is dedicated to all those who see fit to correct my grammar and spelling on here. It’s called ‘Pedents’.

Pedents Foot soldiers in the War on Error, they’re here to save us from ourselves, with Fowler’s Modern English Usage (first edition, nineteen twelve). They scrutinise each word we write for typos, gaffes, et cetera, correcting all our dumb mistakes to make our grammar betterer. They sigh and tut and tell us off for the rules we have forsaken and chart this nation’s steep decline by the care we should of taken. Custodians of the King’s English, they merely serve to keep it pure and restrict, they hope, the ignorant to three mistakes or less. In doing so, they hold no fear they will deprive a thing of life: for it’s not important what is said, what matters is that its right. Brian Bilston

The place we’re staying is above a small village in the southern Dolomites called Mezzano. It’s charming and incredibly tidy and has stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It also has dozens and dozens of woodpiles.

A woodpile, photographed, as it were, full frontal. A pleasing quasi-geometric arrangement filling the shot completely. Another woodpile, the top and bottom half separated by a thickish beam. A large woodpile, similar to the two previous ones (this is the biggest – I’m guessing there are 500+ logs on display). At the bottom the logs are greyish, but there are other bits (top right, for example) where the wood is visibly fresher, with a yellow/orange tinge. Another woodpile, the distinguishing feature of which is that where the logs in the other pictures have the triangular cross-section of wood that has been chopped with an axe, these are circular and have clearly been sawn.

While Shabana Mahmood has been a largely weak and ineffectual Justice Secretary - more concerned with rising to Jenrick’s clickbait than fixing justice - it is absurd that the Ministry of Justice now has its 11th Justice Secretary in 10 years. No wonder the system is on fire.

Worrying long term hidden fiscal drag The family income threshold at which English students maintenance loans start to get reduced is just £25,000/yr. It has been this level since the 2008/2009 academic year. We have had 64% (CPI) inflation since then. So it's been slashed hugely in real terms

“In Kent, a No Use Empty scheme offers interest-free loans for up to 3 years to owners who will let or sell the property afterwards. Though it was set up 20 yrs ago with a relatively modest pot of £5m, today it is self-sustaining.” Very interesting and important piece from the BBC.

I first saw ‘double tap’ attacks during the siege of Sarajevo. A shell or missile hits a building, then as the rescuers arrive, a second one hits. Much used by Russia in Ukraine. Western leaders are demanding to know if the IDF gave orders to do this at the Nasser Hospital.

Amid all the stuff about ‘dangerous London’ and ‘broken Britain’, new figures show the homicide rate in London is at a 10-year low. Killings dropped by 26% over the last year, from 78 to 58. No one under 25 was murdered during the school summer holidays.

They aren't the only two people involved in turning that instruction into a reality. Everyone else lower down the food chain would have known why they were being asked to do it - to intimidate, threaten and bully these women - and they went along with it anyway. Every one of them should be ashamed.

Feeling a bit sorry frankly. A lot of families with a disabled child have to use trust funds to protect their child's economic future, and to miss what was basically one sentence about tax advice in the sort of lengthy paperwork a house purchase entails is an exceptionally easy mistake to make.
