This is a bizarre story. If it's true that the chargers stir up a dangerous cloud, then what's happening when my neighbors runs a leaf blower, or I use my (electric!) lawn mower? I should be dead by now. Is there is a breeze? Kids! GET INSIDE! THE WIND IS BLOWING!

Fair point. I'm in a suburbia where that's not unreasonable. I still think my bigger point is valid, that most customers, if they think about it at all, will underestimate the cost of delivery such that if it is hidden in raised menu prices, they will be more likely to make the order.

26/7/2025, 6:46:47 PM | 2 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent

Unrealistic expectations. If you paid the delivery person $15/hour and $0.655/mile for the vehicle, a pizza coming from 5 miles away can cost $14 to deliver, w/ no overhead, profit, and assuming the driver never has to wait anywhere. But that looks too expensive, so they upcharge the food instead.

That was at a previous employer and I'm not doing that now, but my intro to Julia was using the DiffEq tools to develop control algorithms or analyze behavior of long-existing ones, around substitute in medical devices doing things like control of ultrasound actuators, or pressure or vacuum.

I'm not working on that kind of problem now but it sounds like you could model a system on PC, develop a control law in the simulation, then move the control portion in Julia to a Raspberry Pi and test with hardware. Skip the part where you port the control law to micropython or C. Very cool!

Oh that's not bad at all! I remember either Plots or one of the stripped down DiffEq packages basically taking forever. It churned for an hour or so and I killed it. At the time I was exploring options for prototyping platforms. I was doing simulations on PC but testing on pyboards.

Looks like fun! How's the development and execution experience? It's been several years (okay maybe 4 or 5!) since I tried Julia on a Raspberry pi and doing things like Plots was just miserable, but that was a slower pi and older Julia versions.

Although NOAA's page on atmospheric CO2 levels has vanished, you can still get this vital information from Ralph Keeling's team at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego keelingcurve.ucsd.edu Please follow bsky.app/profile/keel... for updates and share Don't let science be hidden

A graph of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations at the Mauna Loa observatory, Hawaii, from 1958 to 4th February 2025. It shows carbon dioxide levels rising at an accelerating rate over the decades. This is known to be due to emissions of carbon dioxide from human activity, mainly fossil fuel burning but also deforestation. The first CO2 concentration value in March 1958 was 315 parts per million (ppm). The latest daily value is 426 ppm. The graph also shows a seasonal cycle of a few ppm within each year, which is known to be linked to the growing season in the northern hemisphere causing a temporary uptake of carbon in spring and summer and release in autumn. The graph is produced routinely by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego.

The battery replacements are a gamble, if the screen breaks you are out. The $50 was to be delivered thru some dodgy company, and the $100 credit requires waiting weeks for approval while your phone is broken. I bought Samsung A25s as replacements.

But instead they wrote and released an update that reduced battery life to roughly 30% of what it was, making the phones impractical and forcing many owners to upgrade. They promised either battery replacement, $50 cash or $100 in credit but all of those options stink.

Latest Pixel 4a nonsense - if you let the phone get down to 0%, it might decide to not charge and sit for hours on the charger only responding with "0%" on the screen. Plugging and unplugging on a charger with ammeter shows it starting at 1A but then dropping to very low current.
