This is a bizarre story. If it's true that the chargers stir up a dangerous cloud, then what's happening when my neighbors runs a leaf blower, or I use my (electric!) lawn mower? I should be dead by now. Is there is a breeze? Kids! GET INSIDE! THE WIND IS BLOWING!

"Detachable covers for more than 800,000 home fragrance diffusers sold at major outlets nationwide have been recalled due to concerns that the product poses a serious choking hazard to children." Now you don't have to click the clickbaity title (unless you buy these things)
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
Fair point. I'm in a suburbia where that's not unreasonable. I still think my bigger point is valid, that most customers, if they think about it at all, will underestimate the cost of delivery such that if it is hidden in raised menu prices, they will be more likely to make the order.
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
Unrealistic expectations. If you paid the delivery person $15/hour and $0.655/mile for the vehicle, a pizza coming from 5 miles away can cost $14 to deliver, w/ no overhead, profit, and assuming the driver never has to wait anywhere. But that looks too expensive, so they upcharge the food instead.

David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
That was at a previous employer and I'm not doing that now, but my intro to Julia was using the DiffEq tools to develop control algorithms or analyze behavior of long-existing ones, around substitute in medical devices doing things like control of ultrasound actuators, or pressure or vacuum.
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not working on that kind of problem now but it sounds like you could model a system on PC, develop a control law in the simulation, then move the control portion in Julia to a Raspberry Pi and test with hardware. Skip the part where you port the control law to micropython or C. Very cool!
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
I was wanting to do it all in one place for less translation and porting.
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh that's not bad at all! I remember either Plots or one of the stripped down DiffEq packages basically taking forever. It churned for an hour or so and I killed it. At the time I was exploring options for prototyping platforms. I was doing simulations on PC but testing on pyboards.

Does installing and running Makie (I saw use of it in the WiringPI repo) give you time to refill your water, make tea, make scrambled eggs, cook rice, smoke a turkey ...?
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
Looks like fun! How's the development and execution experience? It's been several years (okay maybe 4 or 5!) since I tried Julia on a Raspberry pi and doing things like Plots was just miserable, but that was a slower pi and older Julia versions.

I used to think that we had improved over my lifetime with respect to racism, sexism, and homophobia. Now I think that a large chunk of the apparent improvement was bigots learning to code switch for the first time. They'd be bigots among other bigots but would hide in the presence of decent people.

I am an ex-Catholic for a variety of reasons, but the brothers and nuns and lay teachers did teach compassion and empathy, that Jesus loved the poor and downtrodden as much or more than the wealthy, and would reference the table-flipping story. I'm glad that those values aren't dead.

Exactly. It's a class project so not so big it doesn't fit in your head. Once you've written it once writing it again isn't hard. Stupid people don't know how to judge who is smart.

The battery replacements are a gamble, if the screen breaks you are out. The $50 was to be delivered thru some dodgy company, and the $100 credit requires waiting weeks for approval while your phone is broken. I bought Samsung A25s as replacements.
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
But instead they wrote and released an update that reduced battery life to roughly 30% of what it was, making the phones impractical and forcing many owners to upgrade. They promised either battery replacement, $50 cash or $100 in credit but all of those options stink.
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
To be honest I do not know. There may or may not be some lurking danger. Google said they were updating the Pixel 4a to improve battery stability. Keep in mind, this phone is well out of updates, they could have left them alone.
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
Did you ask some AI how to make the most frustrating customer experience? Why lie about why you are doing this? The truth will get out sooner or later. If you actually know the batteries are dangerous you have a responsibility to share that info. If not, this is the dumbest way to drive sales ever.
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
After a number of those attempts it changed behavior and continued to charge and seems to be coming up. Without access to the meter I wouldn't have been able to tell if it had actually kept charging.
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social)
Latest Pixel 4a nonsense - if you let the phone get down to 0%, it might decide to not charge and sit for hours on the charger only responding with "0%" on the screen. Plugging and unplugging on a charger with ammeter shows it starting at 1A but then dropping to very low current.
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social)
Hey Google! I'm hoping someone starts a class-action lawsuit on the Pixel 4a battery bullshit. Not that I'd get monetary satisfaction but am hoping to see the results of discovery to see which bone-headed overpaid folks thought that whatever this is was a good idea.

Why did LinkedIn suggest I follow Vivek Ramaswamy?
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
So in the update that is supposed to improve stability or some such bullshit, they artificially reduced the battery capacity.
David Klaffenbach (@klaffen.bsky.social) reply parent
I have one of these, and yes it's out of support and I should probably update but it was working fine until Google forced this update. It now charges from 15% to 100% on less than 1000 mAh delivered from the charger, which is nonsense as the battery is specified as over 3000 mAh.

I'm a big fan of Julia but the ecosystem is much smaller than for Python. It has significant advantages if the code you write must execute a lot (e.g. in ODE solver situations) due to it's compilation model.
