Brilliant film. I admire Armando so much. He did a sketch show for Channel 4, in 2001, called 'The Armando Iannucci Shows' which is criminally underseen (this playlist is probably only viewable in the US): www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZdr... To this day, it remains some of the best TV I've seen.

I saw it. I saw her. Best I've ever seen her. Monumental. I avoided spoilers, apart from a clip here or there, and I'm so glad I did. You are so excited to see her here, in her hometown. Magical. I suspect that you're going to simply explode. I'm definitely not sleeping tonight.

You have my empathy, as I too know what it is to feel cursed, and also what it is to have open mics pick up disruptive noise at remarkably inopportune times. All my best vibes are being directed toward your location's weather. If it passes, do know that it was my vibes that did it.

I forgot that the owners had to gut renovate the place in order to destabilize it, but that's all it would take. I lived in a 2 bed in the East Village, with a stabilized lease, for 21 yrs. Within a week of me moving out - too little time for a gut renovation - the place was listed at market rent.

Profile picture Quigley (@kwigli.bsky.social) reply parent

It at least used to be the case that once market rent on a stabilized lease exceeded $2k, when the leaseholder moved out, the unit would be destabilized. No mother nor child would benefit then. Either way, stabilized leases are lucked into, and in no way based on need. That's the issue here.

There are few tracks in her entire repertoire about which I have more mixed feelings. It's such a great sounding track, but it's, well... I love the deep spinal chills I get when Gaga is being especially goofy. But that track can really make me have to lie down. I become immobilized with chills.

While Bob Seger's Rock and Roll bona fides were certainly in order, at the time, it's never evaded my notice that "Old Time Rock and Roll" sounds so sterile and limp. It most certainly does not evoke the raucous, or as Bob would have it "soulful" spirit of a, say, Little Richard.

It's probably worth adding - although it's awkward to add this sort of thing, but it's somewhat relevant here - that Joey is Jewish. For what it's worth, Roger Waters has some appalling political takes (and has made some terrible music), but he has long been right on the Palestine issue.

Related? My old friend Joey (who played drums on the Vaganza LP) was in Atoms for Peace w/ Thom Yorke. He has, since then, played drums for Roger Waters for the past few years. While I've not spoken to him in ages, I've long taken this as a strong sign of where he falls on the Palestine issue.

'82 was a bad year for a rock band to release an R&B flavored album. It was homophobic in the way the whole disco backlash was. They'd released "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon," "Millionaire Waltz," "My Melancholy Blues" & so many songs that weren't exactly AC/DC (the band, not the orientation).

Via interviews, playlists, t-shirts, etc., I've more than gleaned that Charli is an open & proud Lou Reed fan. Quite right, of course. Here, while receiving a trade mag's Hitmaker of the Year award, she speaks of 'VU & Nico.' I was actually moved by this. youtu.be/GQTaD9Vdrf0?...

For posterity, I suppose, and now in keeping with tradition (as I posted one of these last year) here are my 12 favorite albums of 2024. There could be numerous honorable mentions, but I don't want to quarrel with my compulsion to make it, and leave it, 12. [This post has now been revised twice.]

Brat would have been my 2nd most streamed album. My Apple Music stats were screwed as I listened to Brat spread out over three different versions. Spotify Wrapped forsaking albums is lame & telling. 'Britpop' is probably my AOTY, but it's all in the family.

Also, 3 entries in my top artists are Prince. (Really, technically four as The Time are also Prince... or, more accurately, Prince and Morris, but whatever...) Also, it's worth noting that about 50% of my music listening is on vinyl, and I also listen on YouTube, etc. I listen to a lot of music.

Some additional Apple Music Replay stats. I'm unsure of how many use the service, so I'm not sure how meaningful it is to be counted among a given artist's Top 100/500/1,000 listeners. But when it comes to Prince, Kate Bush, A. G. Cook, FKA Twigs, & Empress Of, I find myself among those ranks.

It's Apple Music Replay time. My first ever Bluesky post was last year's lists & never let it be said that I'm one to buck tradition. More concerning than my desire to share this may be the fact that I spent 20, or so, minutes arranging these crude images so this data could be presented here.

You were much closer to the subject matter than I, when the film came out, but I recall thinking it was a noble-enough effort. Far more noble, however, would be setting that shit to music.

I've always taken for granted that it was an adaptation of the Catherine Hardwicke film. I'm kind of shocked that it's not. I liked the film, I think, but I saw it a long time ago. Still, someone should adapt it into a musical since I'm sure we're not the only ones who assume they already did.

I think May December was a great deal better than pretty good, it was my favorite film of last year. One of my favorite films by one of my favorite directors. It's obnoxious to declare "I think that in time people will recognize that film's brilliance." Never let it be said that I'm not obnoxious.

Gorgeous score by Scott Walker, though (his last completed work).

Coachella likes to book full-blown "legends" like McCartney, Roger Waters, Prince, and such, and as peculiar as it is to reckon with this -- if you're an old fuck like me who wasn't paying super close attention -- it seems Green Day now occupies that same kind of rarefied air as a "legacy" act.

It does seem that they can still sell out stadiums in Europe and South America. They sold out Wembley Stadium just this past June, I've learned this evening, and 90k concertgoers is nothing to sneeze at. No match for Taylor, but certainly formidable.

As an aside: That '94 Lolla was by far the best line-up the tour ever had: Nick Cave, Breeders, A Tribe Called Quest, P-Funk, & Beastie Boys... & then the Pumpkins. :( It cannot be overstated just how ill-advised it was to follow the Beasties in 94, particularly if your shtick was dour & whiny.

On their last tour, for some reason, they took out Smashing Pumpkins as their opener. Bizarre choice. True story, though: The only time I ever saw GD, they were bottom of the bill for the '94 Lollapalooza tour. The Pumpkins were headliner, so it seems time had something to say about that.

I'm learning a lot right now. It seems Green Day are bigger than I realized, even though I overestimated the success of their last tour. They're ranked between Nirvana and Alabama on the list of the best selling artists of all time. If Alabama was billed above Charli I would definitely raise hell.

I'm correcting my last post, as it turns out the stadium tour they did last year was undersold in almost every city. Not disastrously so, but it seems they may not be as huge as I was (or apparently they were) thinking.

I was being a wiseguy when I left my previous response to this, but in days since my discover tab has been overwhelmed with pics of fellas stripped to the waist, at a minimum. Time and place. No disrespect, but it's just not the vibe I'm seeking while here.

I've never seen such a thing anywhere on the internet ever, nor have I ever sought it out on a daily basis. Your phone must be broken. I only see the people I'm following. I hadn't clicked on the "discover" tab until now. I'm getting cats, a bunny or two, but not a single cock, butt, and/or ball.

I don't love them, I'd never acquire the 4K UHDs, I'd never purchase any of the 5,000 pieces of merchandise that have suddenly popped up everywhere, but they are slabs of gloriously ugly fun, which do hit the spot right about now. (cont.)

Both films are too long, but I admire their spunky, cocky commitment to excess in all areas. While these films are determinedly, decidedly, & delightfully in the gutter, the sheer commitment of all involved does, in its own way, well, "elevate" the movies. (cont.)
