There's a small peanut gallery on ActivityPub driven by a small number of people mad ATProto is taking off. They sound *exactly* like now-forgotten OStatus grognards who were mad about ActivityPub. Their agitating gives a worse impression of inter-community relations if you don't look too close.

We're better off with competing notions that can interop since people have a hard time seeing past their local norms. AT did it to AP in the same way AP did it to the centralized commercial web. New ideas forced new thinking in old places.
My expectation is Mastodon will fade, and forks and compatible AP implementations will add AT support similar to how wafrn does. AP would fade out and get cut in some unremarkable release the way it happened when Mastodon dropped OStatus. But that's based on current culture. AP might not be doomed!
Which was always silly because nginx (for performance) in front of Apache (for the features) is one of the more popular deployments (unless my memory and/or understanding took a wrong turn)

This is why I always say "ActivityPub-in-practice" Like the statement says, the AP spec has a largely ignored component that could bridge the gap with AT. AT exists because AP-in-practice ignored it for whatever reasons. There's no technical reason it can't have feature parity.
💯 When you actually look at the people doing the coolest work on both sides you see everyone's getting along and nerding out about protocols and the future of technology. The consensus there is pretty much that there's room for different notions and the way forward is collaboration.
I worry this is going to become like the Nightshade/Glaze thing where authors end up wasting time on something that won't do any good. A thing that only occurs in a single book would have such a low weight it wouldn't matter. It might not even make the cut.

If y'all want to keep having cons at an affordable price, you need to have good relationships with the locals. Want larger shares of hotel blocks for cons? Don't make shit costly for them to clean up after you. Want more event space & features? Don't raise the insurance costs for the con staff.
That's the future-looking part. Pressure will mount as things expand and it keeps standing out as a problem. It'll be resolved one way or another.

My instance hit an advanced mode of this where the goal was to initially block it and open it to discussion with the community once they fully implemented AP and everyone could see how it shook out. Threads, never reachable from it, was added to its list of servers banned for "policy violations."
More seriously though the fact that, for example, someone could just make a WhiteWind to Leaflet converter for data resting on the PDS without asking WhiteWind's (very reasonably otherwise occupied) dev or Leaflet or Bluesky is a shining example of how AT is different. See also: PDS MOOver

It's not better than an escape hatch, but a legally actionable promise not to weld the door shut is a good stop-gap.
I don't know if there's any cases testing it but the PBC structure should at least provide some protection against that in the same way it allowed Bluesky to leave Twitter when its mission diverged from Bluesky's. Even the controversial fundraises would have to have been written with it in mind.
In the end, if all goes well, it will be more dencentralized than AP, but the benefits start to accrue long before then.
I think the whole effort there is misguided. AT and AP are apples and oranges. The goals have to be considered. AT isn't _trying_ to be decentralized in the way this measures. It's trying to provide the benefits of centralization with a credible exit.
WordPress (mostly .com), Threads, and Ghost (mostly run by the project itself) only seem to get counted when it's convenient, not when they work against the point.

I've noted the difference in dev culture before but I think @rudyfraser.com labeled it best in this podcast interview: show, don't tell. bsky.app/profile/rudy... There are a few folks on here I watch closely when they say they wish this or that because it means they're about to make it.
AT can potentially provide the positives of centralization and moot the negatives. AP in practice never did that and the few efforts to fix this (like Bridgy) don't get nearly enough support.
Goodhart's law: when the measure becomes the target, it ceases to become a good measure. Centralization is the measure here. arewedecentralizedyet.online ATProto is still new. ActivityPub was more centralized by this metric when it was this old.
