depends on what time of the year. as the sun moves north, more of the north side will be in direct sunlight. the perpetual movement of the sun. even in the dead of winter, the north side will heat up. but not a lot. it's the stupid cruelty of it all that stuns me.

when i went from freelance back into newspaper work in '94 i worked for a fabulous little paper in montana. i made the screen prints in darkroom. layout guy did the hot wax thing. eventually we evolved to use Quark to lay out paper. we've seen the evolution!
people will scream, holler, make signs, protest loudly, but nothing is going to make hump stop. oh, our constitutional rights will be allowed, to meet, to speak, but it is not going to make a damn bit of difference. it is all over now.

#Scape #dunescape #sanddunes the first 3 are from the cadiz dunes in the mojave desert. they are now in wilderness and it is a WHOLE lot more difficult to access the dunes for exploration. the 4th image is an area in newberry springs destroyed by sand and wind and man's hubris.

4/ “wellllllllllll,” he said. i talked with him about my long-term american landscapes project and explained how the photos would also be on flickr — along with his brief story. “johnny, it’s ok. i won’t do you wrong, dude.” he nodded alright.
3/ nobody wants to stop for a guy in a hoodie. like everyone else i have photographed he asked what i was going to do with the photos. with a smile i told him i was going to put them on facebook. he licked his lips and squinted his eyes, a look of trepidation and uncertainty crossed his face.
2/ i had $6 in my pocket so gave that to him to help with gas. near-by a camper was parked with the same sort of sign held by a pretty girl — with blond hair — and a nice figure — and a dog. she had a gimmick. john said “dudes are a sucker for women.” yep.
1/ John — American Landscapes 2015 john needed a gimmick. just standing on the side of the road with a “please help” sign, watching the big rigs go by, wasn’t really working for him. three people had stopped and he had a grand total of $8 to show for their generosity.
i found it.
4/ the odd aspect ratio is due to the nikon 2000e — one of the earliest digital cameras made for photojournalists. #thecampfire (i hope this fits the criteria "tell a story") #route66 #americanlandscapes
3/ in his last years he lived in a ramshackle building next to the cafe where he greeted visitors and told tales of conspiracy and treachery. he never stopped believing the government was looking for him. maybe it was.
2/ time had not been kind to him. i received a letter from bob after our first meeting detailing his military career, how the CIA was after him, how the military had chemically brainwashed him. long before black helicopters entered our national consciousness, they were chasing general bob.
1/ General Bob — American Landscapes project. he said he was a military man, an air force general in fact. and he was hiding out in newberry springs, calif. hanging out at the bagdad cafe on route 66. i first photographed general bob in 1988 - ten years earlier than when i made this image.

do you remember the old darkroom days? you spend hours perfecting one, maybe two prints. lovingly hand them to dry, retouch a spot or two and then what? nowhere to share. i like posting on facebook too. people here and there like my stuff. i post in some groups tailoring the work for them.
what does it cost you to stay here? nothing. i have less engagement than you! of more than 400 followers my last photo got NO VIEWS! but you have a few folks who look at your work and enjoy it. try flickr. i have a few folks there who have been friends since the beginning, i shoot for them.
