Have you seen Merchants of Doubt? It explores the comms strategy for the tobacco and fossil fuels industries. In those cases, the goal was never to convince anyone per se, but to keep the debate going so they had freedom to operate while their opponents debunk claims. tubitv.com/movies/10003...

It could be a Gen Z thing, but I wouldn't use the word fault. Only the oldest among them reached adulthood pre-pandemic. I'd still rather see them a tad under-socialized than starting life with long-COVID, but I don't think we do them any favors by not acknowledging that those years had no effect.

And he's not just a liar, but he's a vengeful liar. After the WFP leaned on him about the IDC he sought revenge, while publicly saying he did no such thing. www.politico.com/states/new-y...

In private, however, Cuomo has taken a much harsher tone against the WFP. Seven people — elected officials and other individuals prominent in state politics — told POLITICO that the governor or his top staff have told them or their close associates in private conversations that he wants to destroy the party. All spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.

Never forget that Cuomo is a self-serving liar. People don't talk about the IDC because its inside baseball, but the upshot is that he convinced a bunch of Dems to caucus w/the GOP in order to maintain his own power. www.politico.com/states/new-y...

But while the governor did not originate the idea of an actual coalition, sources say he and his staff were active in “nudging” it along behind the scenes. The governor’s interest, say knowledgeable sources, was ensuring that Republicans had control over the agenda in the Senate, so that he wouldn’t be handing over power to New York City Democrats. The governor was strongly encouraging the alliance behind closed doors, even as he set it up to absorb the blame from liberals for the failure of a number of their agenda items. In the spring of 2013, Cuomo issued a women’s equality agenda that included abortion rights protections that stood little chance of passing the new GOP-led senate. This put the alliance in a particularly tough spot, because it was being set up to fail one of its biggest public tests. When the Republicans refused to help it pass, groups like NARAL and Family Planning Advocates would slam the IDC on the issue of reproductive choice for months as the measure languished in the senate, singling out Klein by name. Cuomo finally condemned the alliance, under pressure, after he was given a choice this spring by the Working Families Party between publicly calling for the IDC to caucus with Senate Democrats and losing WFP’s endorsement and ballot line to Fordham Law professor Zephyr Teachout, who he now faces in the Democratic primary. At first the governor resisted the demand, with two sources saying he initially refused to include it in a video he recorded for WFP delegates at the party convention in late May. But ultimately he blinked and made the deal, saying in the video, “the Senate has been a problem” and “we must change the leadership of the Senate.”

The former judge has tried to defend himself and is credible, knowing how these brownshirts operate.

Cano’s resignation from the bench halted any formal disciplinary hearings, but in a 23-page letter submitted to the New Mexico Supreme Court, he denied any wrongdoing and said he was unaware of the men’s alleged gang ties. “Let me be as crystal clear as possible,” Cano wrote. “The very first time I ever heard that the boys could possibly have any association with Tren de Aragua was when I was informed of that by [the] agents on the day of the raid.” Cano referred to the three men repeatedly as “the boys” in his letter and defended his decision to allow them to stay on his property. He said they had previously interacted with Border Patrol and HSI without any issues, and that their immigration paperwork led him to believe they were not subject to removal. “Their papers stated in the upper right-hand corner, ‘This Person is Not Subject to Removal.’ They each had a specific court date regarding their asylum hearing,” Cano stated.

Did anyone else get this fundraising email from Newsom yesterday? (I don't know why I'm on this list but I'm glad I got to see this bit of pure chutzpah.)

Text: I am writing to ask you to do something I haven't asked of you in a while. I am writing to ask you to make a donation to a congressional campaign. California Congressman Robert Garcia just returned from a trip to El Salvador where he - and several other members of Congress -- tried to meet with Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Here is the truth: I don't think anyone trusts the Trump administration to run around the country scooping people off the streets and sending them to foreign prisons without some kind of court hearing to prove they are who the administration says they are. In the particular case of Mr. Abrego Garcia, the Trump administration admitted in a court of law that he was wrongfully detained and deported. Now Trump is even talking about doing it to American citizens, The Supreme Court -- Donald Trump's Supreme Court -- ruled that his administration must facilitate the return of Mr. Abrego Garcia to this country. Trump has just decided to ignore that order, and other court orders from lower courts. He is just blatantly and objectively defying the courts, the rule of law, and our system of checks and balances. Congressman Garcia's visit helped to highlight ALL OF THIS and it's one of the reasons Trump's approval rating is sinking like a stone -- even on the issue of immigration. He deserves our thanks. So if you can:

It would almost be worth it to go to my next Oberlin class reunion and find the various people who tried to convince me in 2000 that THIS guy was the same as Bush and...I don't know, throw buckeyes at them.

"...the number of professional pundits who have NOT lost their minds..." I think maybe just Jamelle? And possibly because he doesn't live in NY or DC?

Sincerely held beliefs are good for you; punditry is generally bad for you. I can count on one hand the number of professional pundits who have lost their minds, yet social media has made a pastime of doing it for free. idiotreport.substack.com/p/the-debris...

He hasn't even achieved that reliably. To say Vivian Wilson doesn't share her father's politics is an understatement.

I think an important part of this primary will be educating NYers about ranked choice voting as much as about the candidates. Last time, a hefty number of Kathryn Garcia and Maya Wiley voters ranked Adams (way down on the list). Had they left it blank... Everyone needs to know blank is an option.

Moreover, seeing how the State Department has been playing games with trans citizens' passports, I'm not comfortable with getting to decide in practice who gets to vote.

I can't keep up with which programs Musk is defunding, but after Covid there was a BARDA program to encourage stockpiling of APIs and encourage state-side production. But I guess...we'll do it with tariffs.

I was on X (for work, I have to monitor), and I couldn't help but rubberneck. There were a lot of people arguing we don't NEED vanilla. It's only used in a few foods and the fake stuff is easy to synthesize.

It makes sense that they thought there was little risk in holding out for something better. The idea that you could fall into a pit of spikes reaching for a brass ring is not their experience & they're not to listen to us.

I guess it can grant these people grace to the extent that they were likely raised on fairy tales while, as soon as they reach the age of reason, black children are shown the knife edge this country has danced on.

In the 19th century, oranges were such a rare and expensive treat that it made a good Christmas present. We're going back to that!
