Working from home should not ever have been a child care arrangement to begin with. You are either working or caring for you children.
lauriewoodner.bsky.social (@lauriewoodner.bsky.social) reply parent
One family member's team does go in 2 to 3 days a week. But they don't. They have a meeting and drive in during work hours, often late, have their meeting and then leave to drive home during work hours. Go in for a mandatory day and then leave at noon.
lauriewoodner.bsky.social (@lauriewoodner.bsky.social) reply parent
Family time and child care are not valid reasons people should be at home to work. Child care, getting kids off the bus, giving them snacks, driving them to activities, distracted by them does not make for a productive work environment.

More traffic during rush hour, less traffic on the road all day long. Perhaps the city can decentralize some of their offices, it is possible that is already in the plans. Not all city employees work downtown. Their are offices and hubs all over. We have a library and a service centre out here.
lauriewoodner.bsky.social (@lauriewoodner.bsky.social) reply parent
As a councillor it is incumbent on you to advocate for the city to improve the transit system. There are city employees throughout the city, not just the core.
lauriewoodner.bsky.social (@lauriewoodner.bsky.social) reply parent
What compensation do the 85% of city workers who already work on site get in lieu of the savings the wfh crew realize? Should wfh salaries be adjusted accordingly?
lauriewoodner.bsky.social (@lauriewoodner.bsky.social) reply parent
There will be jobs in complete communities, perhaps the City will put in some offices in different communities. There already are. People can shop in their communities in off work hours and wkends. Really, most people drive into Costco. We have a service hub out where I live, and a library.
lauriewoodner.bsky.social (@lauriewoodner.bsky.social) reply parent
I really don't enjoy all those wfh workers on the roads all day long. Coffee shops will follow the workers wherever they go.

As did I through the pandemic and for a period after so I do understand. It really is nice to stay home particularly when close to retirement, after years in the workforce. I agree that it is not viable in the long term.
lauriewoodner.bsky.social (@lauriewoodner.bsky.social) reply parent
I am looking forward to less cars on the road once all the workers are back in the office. Rush hour will be the pits but there will be less people driving around all day. Using wfh as a substitute for childcare is wrong. Women suffering domestic violence are more at risk in wfh.

lauriewoodner.bsky.social (@lauriewoodner.bsky.social) reply parent
No, that is incorrect. Those employees always had to be onsite obviously. As are front line workers in rec centres, client service centres etc. 85% already work onsite. It means people who's normal worksite is in an office or similar and that have been wfh would be required to be on site 5 days.
