I don't get the impression Ma Dong-Seok actually cares about Hollywood if that makes sense. His movies typically outperform US blockbusters in Korea and he produces many of his own films which lets him play the roles he wants to play.
I think Kumail Nanjiani's feelings on this makes a lot more sense when you consider the other Eternals cast. After the movie tanked Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Ma Dong Seok all went back to being a-listers, and Barry Keoghan got big from Saltburn. Meanwhile, this was kind of Kumail's big break.

Yeah the lack of any one "true" GOTY award also means stuff like this can just be ribbons to collect for the accolades trailer. Which is fine in and of itself, but won't be driving any one studio or team to chase them.

It's a different question than asking whether as an industry we're prone to give GOTY to a specific kind of game each year, and that's valid. I think GOTY winners from the past decade can all point to having a similar budget or graphical prowess.
Oscar baits are created when either a studio, director, or actor intentionally goes out to produce a work they can use to singularly target an Oscar. No studio or game director is spending 5-6 years to try and win a specific GOTY award.

Like the number of people who had an imagined version of Elden Ring that didn't line up with the actual game was pretty interesting, and I feel there's probably a lot of that around Silksong.
I flirted with a similar article once around Elden Ring and how once it came out a lot of people were like "Oh this is just open world Dark Souls?" and I think there's a not insignificant number of people who just like being part of a hype machine and letting their imaginations take the wheel.
