my read on this is that SF as a genre isn't organized around a canon anymore. 1) there's just a lot of books out there 2) there's so much genre blending it's hard to nail down "pure SF" 3) a lot of it has crossed over into the mainstream. it looks a lot like death, but I read it more as biodiversity
