When ICE shot a man in Franklin Park, Chicagoans felt that as deeply as they would have if it had happened in Pilsen, Little Village, or my neighborhood. (You should feel it that deeply, too, by the way.)
As a Chicagoan, I feel good about how our governor and our mayor have handled things, but that doesn't change the reality of the moment—and this is a very ugly, very challenging moment.
I'm not sure I understand those arguments. Is it a very American fixation on borders? Do people not understand that the fabric and reality of a place are not so boxed in? Or is it about wanting to say that Pritzker beat Trump when the troops didn't come?
ICE has been sidestepping some of the city's most organized resistance. They're learning, and they are also wearing people out. Meanwhile, conservatives will cover their attacks on Chicagoland as successful operations in Chicago, while a lot of liberals (who don't live here) insist the city is fine.
Poor suburban areas in Chicagoland often lack the organizing infrastructure that exists inside the city. So locals are under-resourced, and people from other areas are on the move constantly trying to document and assist.
Most people I know in Chicago have close friends and family members outside the city's boundaries (including me). That's the result of gentrification. Pretty much everyone I know who still lives within city limits worries about being priced out. I think about it all the time.
Chicagoland is Chicagoland, and the feds shouldn't be snatching neighbors anywhere in or around our city.
Would they have be spending more time in the heart of the city if they were flanked by the National Guard? Idk. But I can promise you that no vulnerable person anywhere in this city feels safe, because these guys are out there grabbing people and could pivot in any direction at any time.
We're also in the middle of a weeks-long operation. Wearing everyone's resources ragged by striking in far-flung corners in and around a very large city could still be a prelude to more attacks where you would expect them. We don't know. But they're taking people.
Amid these ICE raids, something folks should understand about the Chicago suburbs is that a lot of stereotypes about the era of white flight from the city do not apply. A lot of these folks were priced out of Chicago and many commute to work here. They are part of the same social fabric.
