I once lived where a disaster could wipe out road access, and we had to maintain supplies to wilderness camp for 3 weeks with zero notice. We had multiple grocery stores, fast food, pharmacies, etc, but those businesses don’t keep back stock of anything. If a truck can’t come once a week you’re SOL.
I can’t find where I read it now, but I just read someone saying that the US government is an abusive family where Republicans = dad who blows up, beats people and isn’t held responsible for his own actions and the Democrats = mom who is blamed for “making dad do it” and for staying with him.

Right? Even as a voracious reader, I’m only going to get to read so many books in my lifetime. I don’t want to spend a lot of time reading windows into the past *coughHeinleincough* that are just going to make me go “Dear God this is racist” and “Dear God this is sexist.”
There’s a difference, though, between winning an award because your book is a classic for the ages, versus because your stuff is relatable and popular in the time it was written. And, God forbid, winning an award because your stuff was not great but the best thing available at the time.
People have VERY unrealistic ideas of how popular fiction ages. For every genuine classic that appears in a decade, there are hundreds of bestsellers that everyone was reading that just… disappear. As they should! It makes sense that most books are “for their time” and not “for all time.”
People are literally burning plastic to cook over, which is so dangerous.
