Wrong tense
The piece you are missing is that it does not matter if his successor is popular. Support only matters in a democracy. There will be no more fair elections and they hold all the levers of power and violence. All will be done in the name of the martyred god when he dies.
Or in 2026. We will have armed men in blue cities, extreme gerrymandering and voter suppression, and outright fraud if they still lose a house seat or two. Real elections are over.
