At last a bit of positive news- I’ve finally got my Mum into a local nursing home. No more 1.5hr round trips after work to see her, and with the dark nights drawing in I’m very glad to not have to do those long winding country roads in the dark. Feels very odd without her here though.

I’ll probably get told off by someone for objectifying them or something 😁, or that it’s not nice to kill then for food- but as a vegetarian for over 30yrs I can categorically say no herons were/will be harmed in the making of this image💁🏼‍♀️

It’s GRACKLEPALOOZA time again! We have a few in the yard throughout the summer, but as migration approaches, they multiply! There are probably at least 100 here at times and it will increase! This male Common Grackle is almost done his moult and thinks he shouldn’t be named “common”! #Birds 🪶

They were really difficult weren’t they- but the other guy just sat in the open singing his heart out. This was as good as I got from the male who was with the female on the other side. Definitely some side-eye going on there .

Climbing up a bank and on tiptoes if I remember correctly :) it was at least an easier catch than the male and female on the opposite side eh Lorraine. We nature lovers do like a challenge though.

We’ve had a couple of spotted sandpipers hanging around one of the local marshes this year. They are usually bop bop bopping along with their funky dance. But this time, one decide to fly to the next foraging spot! #Birds #photography #wildlife 🪶

A spotted sandpiper flys across the frame. It’s quite brown with a white tummy and, umm, lots of spots! The background is dark but interspersed with blurred green vertical colours that are out of focus reeds.

A study in Flamingo morning rituals for #FlamingoFriday TGIF, we made another week! Good weekend all! #birds

Four Greater Flamingos, standing in shallow water preening, after waking up. The closest bird facing to the right, is in profile and standing on one long pink leg, with its head bent down, preening the lower neck. The three out of focus in the background. are also all preening. The water looks black and has ripples, reflecting their images. The background is dark, as the camera adjusts to not overexpose the white feathered bodies of the birds.

The Sony a7RV does humans, animals, birds, insects, and vehicles. It comes at the cost of fps but it does ok for me in most circumstances

I never had a dslr but from what I understand the evfs in the mirrorless cameras really help.

Yeah that’s where some of the new mirrorless bodies really shine, especially with the advanced AF. Mine has insect AF which certainly helps to get the eye sharp. Still need to work on the panning techniques of course.

That’s a great way to get them. This one was flying almost in a figure of eight around the side of a lake patrolling its territory, I got lucky a few times as it flew almost parallel to me.

Cedar Waxwings are named after the little waxy red tips, called astaxanthin, on their secondary feathers. This Cedar Waxwing was pulling off some fancy aerial manoeuvres while hunting bugs, and showed off these tiny red tips! The astaxanthin are now thought to be involved with social status.

A cedar waxwing, with its tan body and black face mask, flying against a blue sky. Its wings and tail are completely flared out and we can see the little red waxy tips on its secondary feathers called astaxanthin. These small red waxy tips is what they are named for!

A few days ago I posted a barn swallow bathing in a marsh. But they weren’t the only ones, and it was hard to know for sure if they were flying in for a bath or a drink. This Tree Swallow was thirsty and has just finished plowing the water for a drink! #Birds #photography #wildlife 🪶

A tree swallow flys very low over a marsh. Its dark blue head and back are shimmering and its beak is wide open showing the red inside. It has just taken a drink and you can see the little furrow it created in the water by its tail.

The week is rushing by, so here is a juvenile European Bee-eater also rushing by! Nyoooom. #birds

A bird, wings folded, flies past carrying a bee in its curved beak. It has not yet developed the full adult colours. All the same, the chest can be seen to becoming a light blue, its chin yellow, the top of the head that rich rusty brown and the wings going from green to brown. Its eye is still brown and will become red later. It half hangs its feet down as it probably needs more landing practice! Joke. The background is the blue Spanish sky.
