This is a much better cost ratio than when US fighters downed a $50 hobby balloon over Canada. Joke aside, sidewinders should become much cheaper if they are used more.

That was the uncrewed Apollo 4, and I correct myself, the first crewed flight was end October 1968 (Apollo 7). The first orbital flight of Saturn 1 which is not a Saturn 5, was as said SA-5 in Jan 1964.
Dr. Mattias Holm (@lorrden.openorbit.org) reply parent
The first crewed flight of V was December 1968, the first orbital flight of I was January 1964, which ends up as about 5 years.
Dr. Mattias Holm (@lorrden.openorbit.org) reply parent
Saturn I (a Roman 1) was the predecessor of Saturn V, reading roman numerals is obviously hard.
Dr. Mattias Holm (@lorrden.openorbit.org) reply parent
It took 5 launches and over 5 years to get that far, and another 5 years to get a manned Saturn V to orbit.
Dr. Mattias Holm (@lorrden.openorbit.org) reply parent
For example, Saturn I SA-5 was the first Saturn to reach orbit. Except for the cameras being jettisoned and picked up, most of it burned up (intentionally).
Dr. Mattias Holm (@lorrden.openorbit.org) reply parent
Yes, but if the mission objective was fulfilled (without loss of life obviously), would it matter if the rocket blew up or burned up on reentry as planned?
Dr. Mattias Holm (@lorrden.openorbit.org) reply parent
The Saturn I had around 5 launches during a five year period, testing incremental improvements. None of them failed spectacularly, but if your goal is to build hundreds or thousands of rockets, you need mass production and you might as well blow a few up on the way.
Dr. Mattias Holm (@lorrden.openorbit.org) reply parent
Plenty of rockets have blown up, especially in the early US ICBM program. We know how to avoid catastrophic failures by extreme design reviews, but that does lead to long time to and between launches.
