The Saturn I had around 5 launches during a five year period, testing incremental improvements. None of them failed spectacularly, but if your goal is to build hundreds or thousands of rockets, you need mass production and you might as well blow a few up on the way.
Plenty of rockets have blown up, especially in the early US ICBM program. We know how to avoid catastrophic failures by extreme design reviews, but that does lead to long time to and between launches.
It did make it to space, and it looks like the previous problems have been solved.
