I'm so glad you got this, bc I was less than articulate (I had literally been up for about 15m). A think I've been thinking about since this conversation is an AA principle: a policy of "attraction rather than promotion." You don't try to convince someone they're an alcoholic and thus need AA.
Perry Bacon (@perrybaconjr.bsky.social) reposted
I couldn't quite nail why @anamariecox.bsky.social's comment resonated so much with me. But you did. I am not against persuading people. That's important. But many people invoking the word persuasion constantly are just status quo defenders. The term civility serves the same purpose.
Chase Madar (@madar.bsky.social) reply parent
And while I’m in favor of persuasion (see my linked essay) it has to be seen as a means rather than self-regarding end in itself, or else we get nowhere www.bostonreview.net/forum/the-ri...
Chase Madar (@madar.bsky.social)
I like this. The drum beat for “persuasion” and “civility” serves as a demand for self-censorship and avoidance of important but divisive issues. The implicit demand to first ~persuade~ our way to total consensus before any political change serves only the status quo and those sitting pretty in it

While parts of universities remain deeply invested in Zionism, for years most of those doing the actual teaching (adjuncts, grad students) are opposed to US policy Also, most legacy US media coverage of the siege of Gaza has still been very tilted to Israel – tho not TikTok, YouTube, etc.
