51. Example: Despite being a senior officer, Troi's role on the bridge was almost entirely a feminine, nurturing role. She didn't get a uniform until season 6 and was not a bridge officer until season 7 despite being stationed on the bridge. The show runners admit she was dressed as eye candy.
50. Much as we like to remember otherwise, TNG was simply not that progressive. Even compared to a show like M*A*S*H that wrapped just 4 years earlier. It's set in a progressive society but it almost always flinched when it came to matters of importance and largely toed a centrist line.

49. Garak and Quark's "root beer" conversation was the most beautifully subtle examination of Federation cultural hegemony. It skirted dangerously close to self-awareness for a show that was incredibly US-centric in outlook.
Entirely my point. Writing it into a story is the worst kind of wish-fulfillment. Especially concerning when I only ever see it when the male character is hyper aggressive.
48. There is no reason Data should not have been able to understand idioms. Even rudimentary translation dictionaries include idioms. It was good for neither showing his outsider status or as a source of comedy.

47. TNG and DS9s attitudes to disability were steeped in 90s ”differently abled” political correctness. The simple fact that there were multiple species in multiple environments could have illustrated the point far more effectively without the heavy handed handwringing.

43. Klingons were often used in situations where Tellarites would have been better. I think Abrasive Space Dwarves would have been a great addition to trek stories.
42. As much as Michelle Forbes would have been great, having Ro as the XO of DS9 would have been a misake. She never could have had the same arc Kira had.
41. Deanna dating Worf is part of the entirely creepy TV tradition of aggressive men dating their therapists. Other examples include Suits and Person of Interest. I don't know who wrote that into TNG but they need a therapist themselves IMO. One they won't hit on.

We started watching DS9 at the point it coexisted with TNG and alternated episodes.
The kids TNG education, unit one, is nearly complete.
I hated how they defeated the Borg Collective by teaching them individualism as a young commie in the 90s and I hate it now.
I am mostly surprised they introduced a character who wasn’t a buffet item.
