We can't just not authorize new housing until Costa Hawkins is repealed, that is delusional. BMR units are a lot more helpful to low and moderate income people today than new RC market rate units at market rent.
Mark Hogan (@markasaurus.bsky.social) reply parent
There are 400+ units of BMR housing going up two blocks from my office thanks to state streamlining bills. I don't really understand this argument.
Mark Hogan (@markasaurus.bsky.social) reply parent
Finances and the building code constrain it more than anything. Allowing more density near existing transit makes a better use of public resources so I don't fully agree with that.
Mark Hogan (@markasaurus.bsky.social) reply parent

Mark Hogan (@markasaurus.bsky.social) reply parent
I just think all of our politicians are a pretty mixed bag on housing with a few exceptions. I'm working to stop the Engardio recall but at the same time he spent time defending single family zoning in a previous campaign.
Mark Hogan (@markasaurus.bsky.social) reply parent
Even Aaron sponsored the citywide ADU law, eased office conversions via planning code changes and passed the biggest upzoning in SF history (that last one was in his first go around on the BOS). He also negotiated the reduction in inclusionary units to help make projects pencil out
Mark Hogan (@markasaurus.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean I don't think this is really true in SF even. The majority of moderate politicians here have historically also sided with NIMBYs. People like Scott Wiener have been the exception. Dean actually brokered a deal to give Related a lot of extra height on a market rate tower to help it pencil out.
