Let’s be clear: Trump intervening in the NYC mayor’s race will be political poison to any candidate who benefits.

Tonight one of the CDC’s top public health leaders, Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, has resigned from his post. Below is his full resignation letter. You should read every word. This is a truly scary moment for public health in America. 1/2

There is a purge underway tonight because those professionals have refused to roll over as RFK ramps up his war on the covid vaccine. We are entering uncharted territory. The foundations of public health in the country are cracking. 2/

Americans need to understand what’s happening tonight at the CDC. This was an agency held together over the last 7 months by scientists with decades of experience in public health, who hung on despite a relentless assault on science-based policy by RFK and Trump. 1/

What Trump has done so far to help fight crime in NYC: * Cut our FEMA anti-terror funding * Cut our DOJ gun violence prevention grant * Proposed cutting our DOJ funding for hate crime response * And most importantly: Refused to lift a finger to stop the flow of guns into NYC from other states

It’s much harder to build housing in Blue states than it is in Red states. So yes people are moving away from Blue states. One more reason that addressing the housing shortage in NY and elsewhere must be an urgent priority.

The Trump deportation nightmare is even worse than we feared. A new report reveals that ICE has detained *50* children under 18 in the NYC area since January. At least 4 as young as 6 years old. 38 children have already been deported. This achieves nothing other than cruelty.

And here in NYC today another shocking escalation by Trump. The law *explicitly allows* unannounced visits by congressmembers to federal facilities. This is yet another breach of democratic norms by an increasingly rogue administration. Don't normalize this.

Reminder that this country had an insurrection on Jan 6 and Trump refused to send in the National Guard.

The “Run For Their Lives” movement began in Central Park, to call attention to the plight of the hostages. I’ve joined them many times. There is no Jewish person in NYC or America who will not be shaken to their bones by this. Truly heinous. Shame on anyone who tries to justify this.

This is horrific. Dylan, a Bronx high schooler who fled violence in Venezuela, did everything right. But without a lawyer present, ICE trapped & arrested him - stripping him of his protections & sending him into a brutal, fast-tracked deportation process. We must demand his immediate release.

America has just lost a giant. Korean war hero. Civil rights champion. Icon of Harlem political history. The Lion of Lenox Avenue. I’m devastated by the loss of a man I was honored to call a friend and mentor. Rest in power Chairman Rangel. bit.ly/3ZwWX70

20k people cross the Queensboro bridge every day on bikes or on foot. If all are forced into cars how will that relieve congestion?

First they arrested a judge. Now they’ve arrested the mayor of a major American city. This isn’t normal. This is an assault on democracy.

I’m running for NYC Comptroller to protect our pensions–and fight back against Trump’s attacks. I won’t stay silent while MAGA hijacks corporations for their culture war. Blue cities and states must flex our shareholder muscle—before it’s too late. 8/8

Study after study shows that companies with strong diversity, labor, and climate practices are better managed and more resilient. This isn’t political—it’s smart, responsible investing on behalf of the people counting on these pensions. /7

When we push corporations to respect workers, protect the environment, and uphold civil rights, we’re protecting long-term value. That’s what retirees depend on—and what fiduciary responsibility demands. /6

Red states are using their public pension funds to *punish* companies that support diversity or climate action—even if it hurts those funds’ own retirees. But blue cities and states can win this fight: our pensions are collectively more than twice as big as red states. /5

At Starbucks, a majority of shareholders—led by public pension funds—voted for an independent labor rights audit. At Wells Fargo, they won a vote demanding accountability on discrimination and fake diversity practices. This is real power. We need to be using it much more. /4

These pension funds can vote against corporate board members who roll back diversity or climate goals. We can file shareholder resolutions demanding transparency on workforce diversity, LGBTQ+ protections, and union rights. And it works. /3

NYC’s pension funds alone have over $280B in assets, with investments in virtually every corporation in America. This gives us power as shareholders. Together with pension funds in CA, IL, MA, WI, OR, CN, etc our collective assets are in the trillions. /2

Trump is trying to bully corporations into abandoning diversity, climate action, LGBTQ+ rights & labor protections. But our side is not helpless. Blue city and blue state pension funds collectively have over $3 trillion in assets. Let’s use this power to fight back. 🧵/1

It’s hard to keep track of all the ways Trump is slashing funding for vital programs in NYC. We have to call it out. We have to fight back. Here’s what we’re up against:

The next thing Trump is trying to tear down: the arts 100s of non-profits in NYC just had their NEA funding cut mid-year. Theater, dance, museums, galleries all over the city. Serious blow to a struggling sector. All to fund tax cuts for billionaires.
