I don't watch much anime these days, but the chance to see some in the cinema was intriguing, especially with the crap weather yesterday, so I went to see DEMON SLAYER: INFINITY CASTLE. Didn't always know what was going on, but the animation and action sequences are incredible

Tonight I sat in a theatre bar and two white people insisted to me that blackface was actually pretty funny, black people weren’t actually offended by it, and the pushback against it was all from white people “just looking to be offended”. Ah yes, the notoriously liberal arts

Finished watching the second series of WEDNESDAY on Netflix, which got me thinking about the franchise as a whole. 30s comic strip, 60s TV series, three 90s films, a stage musical, two recent animated films, and now this. Nearly 100 years of a pretty simple idea. And more to come

White people, who have said nothing about the genocide of non-white people, getting upset when one single extremely racist white man is killed, should sit down and think about how that looks

Delighted to report that, having screwed up the finale of their last two attempts to end this show, the last episode of DEXTER: RESURRECTION bucks the trend and is supremely satisfying. Would devour a second series of this if they end up making one, greenlight it please x

This is an amazing response to all the rampant racism running unchecked in the UK now, in that it makes everyone across the political spectrum immediately see through it as an obvious lie and makes everyone hate him even more than they already do

There's really no other way to say this other than DEXTER: RESURRECTION is the best thing on TV at the moment, the latest episode is a culmination of a character arc that began in 2006, and you should all be watching it. Just one episode left, please don't fuck it up guys

The increasingly far right seem to have infiltrated pretty much everything now - even a political party led by a former human rights lawyer who used to let refugees sleep on his couch makes “a country of strangers” speeches - racism and hatred emboldened every day
Mark Oosterveen (@markoosterveen.bsky.social)
On a more positive note, DEXTER: RESURRECTION is still going strong, the latest episode being yet another doozy. They've ended this show twice before, both very badly, and with just two episodes left I'm bracing myself. Finales are hard. Stick the landing guys, please!

Last night I saw the reboot of THE NAKED GUN, which is quite possibly the stupidest film I've ever seen, and good god I laughed so much, more than I can remember in a film for years. Not quite on a par with the original, but up there with the sequels. We need humour these days x
Mark Oosterveen (@markoosterveen.bsky.social)
Just got up to date with DEXTER: RESURRECTION, and god damn why aren't more people talking about this show? Outrageous shit, the best TV I've seen in ages. Only three episodes left, please please please stick the landing guys, I don't think I could handle a third bad finale

Heartbreaking to watch a much of our world descend into misogyny, butchery, homophobia, transphobia and out and out racism and realise that those politicians and media outlets we thought would fight them actually are more confident encouraging them, platforming them and silencing criticism

Escaped the heat again with a cinema trip this afternoon, and what a treat - the new horror film WEAPONS is genuinely excellent, a Rashomon-esque narrative that culminates in a completely gonzo ending that was immensely satisfying. 2025 proving a great year for horror so far...

The new series of DEXTER: RESURRECTION is somehow managing to sneak a shocking twist into the end of almost every episode so far. It's completely ridiculous but I'm loving every minute of it. Having screwed up the "end" of the show TWICE before though, can they avoid a triple?

There's a sequel out, so I went back and watched HAPPY GILMORE, for the first time since it came out THIRTY YEARS AGO. I feel incredibly old and a little bit sad, but the film made me laugh, possibly more than than it originally did. There was a time when this was all we needed

Had a good time with THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS, which overcomes the hurdles of superhero fatigue by having a unique retro-futuristic 1960s setting and a visual style that really pops off the screen. Sometimes these stories work because they're simple, and innocent, and fun

Mark Oosterveen (@markoosterveen.bsky.social)
Starving kids. My dad almost starved to death as a child. He grew up in Nazi-occupied Holland. He and his two sisters had to eat tulip bulbs to stay alive. If I ever said I was hungry as a child, he would give me a look and say "you don't know what hungry is." Starving kids.

So I enjoyed 28 YEARS LATER, which posed the excellent question - would the virus-infected not-zombies from the first film be more scary if they were much bigger, basically naked and had large willies flopping about? Answer is yes. A bold choice, but I support boldness.

Mark Oosterveen (@markoosterveen.bsky.social)
The BBC have done the right thing by putting 28 DAYS LATER on iPlayer, very convenient for me as I'm getting old and needed reminding of it before seeing the new one. It still holds up remarkably well, especially in a world post-Covid, the deserted London streets eerily familiar

When people support Andrew Cuomo, what they’re saying implicitly is that they don’t care about the women he’s already sexually harassed and retaliated against and they won’t care if he does it again. It’s a political stance that enables discrimination against women in government

PREDATOR is such a weird franchise. The original's a classic guilty pleasure. The sequel is so-so. Two bad crossover films with Alien. Another so-so sequel. Then a bad sequel. Then a surprisingly good prequel! And now an animated film called KILLER OF KILLERS that's really good?

I like the John Wick films, and the spinoff BALLERINA is very much in the same vein. Films like these used to be a dime a dozen, but they're weirdly archaic now, oddly comforting slices of aesthetically pleasing, balletically choreographed violence. Check it out x

Dad again, with my mum this time, on their wedding day in Malawi, 1969. For such a serious man, who in many ways had a very difficult life, I know that there were times he was deliriously happy, and found it hard to believe his luck. I know that this was one of those times.
