Isn’t this the heart of our problem? Farage will always spew nonsense, and dangerous nonsense at that, but we might have expected a Labour government not to leave it to the Lib Dems, Greens and charities to make the moral and intellectual case against him.
If the media want a counterpoint to Farage, there is no point looking to Labour and the Conservatives at the moment. The Lib Dems and Greens need to be given more airtime. After all, their combined vote share is up there with these three parties. Ignore these voters at your peril.

Reform UK, which has a grand total of four MPs, was just given an uninterrupted platform for an hour and a half on the BBC and Sky News channels, in order to talk about its plans for mass deportations When was the last time the Greens (with four MPs) or the Lib Dems (with 72) were given the same?
There is a core of Reform support, together with all the even further right, who will never be persuaded by evidence. I am hopeful, however, that proper scrutiny of their nonsense could reduce their overall support and therefore the potency of their misinformation.
It’s worse than that. We have a moral vacuum in which right wing politicians and journalists amplify one another’s dangerous nonsense, while government ministers remain timidly silent and the BBC forgets what it’s for.

No MP should be propagating this offensive and dangerous nonsense. My impression in visiting an asylum hotel was of bleakness and despondency. There was security on the door as a reminder of the threat they were living under because of exactly this sort of misinformation.
This is absolutely ridiculous Antonia. These aren't plush hotels. We're talking bog standard accommodation NOT free hotel rooms. Maybe move away from the Daily Mail.
And of course if we processed claims faster, perhaps even in France, and established safe routes, we wouldn’t have as much of a problem. The situation is certainly unsatisfactory but the answer is not making asylum seekers suffer even more degrading treatment.
