Whatās annoying is that journalists covering social media are almost allergic to pointing out this ludicrous level of bias because theyāre invested in the idea of a marketplace of ideas and it makes them feel bad.

I am positive that there is a status component to this. At my kidsā school, you see people camped out an hour before dismissal even though you actually spend less time waiting if you show up last-minute! They want to be first in line. Although I also wonder how many of them are sending nannies.
I think it's a sick coping mechanism. By aiming all criticism at these sorts of obviously-necessary-if-sometimes-flawed harm reduction measures, they reassure people that the pandemic wasn't that scary, so it can be safely forgotten. 'Nobody had to live in fear for months. It'll never happen again.'

It's unconscionable that in a time of such grave peril for a vulnerable minority, one who has borne the brunt of all Trump's hatred and extremism in executive order after executive order (and I didn't even scratch the surface btw) that a single Democrat is making trans women in sports their focus.
So, when a Democrat makes their only statement on trans issues about trans women in sports, they are saying that this is their priority on trans issues - not restoring our equality under the law but joining Republicans in eroding it.
What do I know about politics, but this is clearly bad communication and bad strategy. Admitting your opponents have a point ā one they completely made up, because trans kids competed in sports for years with no issue ā instead of talking about their many unpopular positions and straight up fascism.
Mainstream Democrats love nothing more than seeming reasonable. They prefer it to doing things for the public, or standing up for their beliefs, or even winning. The thing they care about most is looking reasonable to an imaginary audience.
What you're saying is also correct, I just feel like this is an error that isn't talked about very much. It's deliberately passing up an opportunity to talk about fiftyeleven different emergencies and making an excuse to agree with them, just so they can seem reasonable. At this of all times!
I think the biggest harm is in deciding this is the subject we should about. The administration is kidnapping people, sending the military into cities, attacking public health ... and with all that going on, some people think it's smart to say "but they're right about trans kids in sports?!"
Itās vitally important that the press report critically on concerns about the health of the president, as long as thatās bad for Democrats.

The important thing is that itās a means to an end, not a goal, and we canāt let people internalize the idea that they have to perform respectability to deserve rights.
The leaders of the Civil Rights Movement used respectability as a tool for specific reasons, to win sympathy from the public. You can argue it helped ā but that was 60+ years ago, in a totally different environment, and it's very clear the opposition has adapted!
