Excellent thread. I'll just add that there's a long history of blaming liberals for reactionary political dynamics that were cultivated by coordinated political campaigns by the far right. There is no law of nature that produces "backlash politics." It's politics (and propaganda) that produces it.

*white leftists and liberals. Black people, by and large, understand the psychology of white elites and what guides them. When we point this out, the backlash is immediate, and sustained We will not defeat fascists, and oligarchs who enable them, by waving away the fact that they are just bad ppl

Nationalism is by default unimaginative and paradoxically every example of it is broadly similar to other examples everywhere else in the world. It's always about flags and chants and xenophobic exceptionalism. The mantra of people who don't have the imagination to actually love where they live.

A good thread on the fall of UChicago. I'd add that they leaned harder into speech panic than perhaps any other major institution. It turns out, if you can believe it, that there were more pressing issues on campus.

I keep saying this but it remains true: Dems have not learned the central lesson of Reconstruction, that multiracial democracy cannot survive when those working to overthrow the rule of law & fair elections are allowed to operate with impunity.

Florida bans the Diary of Anne Frank. A literary classic that serves as a cautionary tale about the rise of fascism and the importance of documenting atrocities as they’re occurring. We all must document this time in history. Keep copies. Write everything down. Make sure that the truth will out.

Gonna try to outflank the usual centrists who show up to things like this: HEY GUYS ITS 2025 WE HAVEN'T HAD A PRIMARY YET. Gavin Newsom is NOT the candidate, we have plenty of time to find another person! If you're dedicated to him NOW then you're dedicated to transphobia and harming the homeless.

Too many people have been trying to understand them for far too long. And I’ve seen far too many articles about trying to understand the MAGA voter. This is a bad marriage. In a related opinion, General Sherman should’ve been given carte blanche to go back-and-forth over the south for a decade.

Took me being around a lot of white, conservative, southerners in college to get the right-wings number. They are bad people, who relish in doing bad things. They will lie, cheat, and steal to get to power. And proudly be hypocritical to wield power. You don't argue w/these people, you defeat them.

i think one issue is that this approach has proven to be a total failure. a partisan who sees the right as morally deficient will have had a better track record at predicting the events of the last few years than someone who is endlessly trying to demonstrate their nuance.
