Interesting to think about the difference in context of the "democratization of media" narrative during the rise of social media. Nominally individuals are given more voice but maybe harder to coalesce mass movements due to fragmentation (not sure how to square this with e.g. arab spring, though?)

One thing that changed my thinking a bit: automatic transmission means you have a free hand to use a phone, so the impact of smartphones would likely be more pronounced in countries with more automatic transmissions (e.g. US, Canada) compared to, say, EU counterparts.
