The fundamental issue is that cutting crime means investing in things that since the civil rights movement, and especially since Reagan, the US has argued that people need to "earn." And having well invested public resources lowers the cachet of being rich

I think we need to stop saying that people hate crime. They like punishment. There are clear ways to reduce crime that involve systemic investment in communities but we avoid doing that in favor of ever more militarized policing because too many people in power like punishment.

I also don't think that people outside of the US grasp that hanging the flag outside of discrete days (like Memorial day, the 4th of july etc) reads as racist to a lot of Americans (especially as Black ones). It's like a little warning sign to be careful, when someone seems a bit too into the flag.
