Follow the money. Didn’t line the pockets of the big contractors. And they are firmly entrenched in designing what the military says it wants. After they get specs to meet. Not in imagining things that the military might want. Should probably want. As is traditional, planning to win the last war.

I cannot imagine how one could “reform” such an institution. It’s deep culture is so criminal, abusive, and corrupt that the *idea* that it could be reformed seems… ridiculous. The personnel you might keep would be resistant. And the public will have ZERO trust of what’s essentially the Gestapo.
Patrick McLaughlin (@mclpatrick.bsky.social) reply parent
Frankly, it’s pretty bloody obvious to anyone willing to look. But the GOP live in his codpiece. Or his Depends (there’s some debate). And those soulless bastards voted to pass the budget that funds ICEtapo. When we eventually deal with the fascist infection, ICE needs to be disbanded.
Patrick McLaughlin (@mclpatrick.bsky.social) reply parent
I think that this is “chili” as claimed by Cleveland. For much of my young life, my father worked for a corporation HQ’d there — and many of the employees in SoCal (and some other places, I think) lived in fear of being promoted… to Cleveland. This helps make clear *why*. Abomination.

Never ask about the average. It’s distorted by a few really high end cases. ALWAYS demand the median. Which I’m sure is even worse than 11k (and falling). Also, this dynamic is a feature (not a bug) of late stage capitalism; stripping the last wealth from those creating it for the rentiers.

And what that says is that Dershowitz *knows* that he’d lose against the vendor in a heartbeat — that he doesn’t have any actual case.
Patrick McLaughlin (@mclpatrick.bsky.social) reply parent
Funniest part is that he’s not suing the vendor. He’s just trying to intimidate the farmer’s market into creating a policy that deprives their vendors of their right not to decline to do business with someone. Be prepared to lean on and support the organization behind the farmer’s market.
Patrick McLaughlin (@mclpatrick.bsky.social) reply parent
There’s not enough actual logic in that statement to blow your nose on. Population loss, gain, or internal movement could justify changing district lines. We do that once a decade. TX just did (and gerrymandered like hell). Trump just wants more… political crime.
Patrick McLaughlin (@mclpatrick.bsky.social) reply parent
“In theory.” But they are being drawn professionally using big data to ensure that they aren’t close to competitive. And political theory is great… but this is in practice. And with fascists in power, it’s for all the marbles. If they win the midterms, it’ll all be over (if it isn’t already).

If we accept the idea that “elections have consequences,” it should be brutally obvious that “wars have consequences.” The CSA was about slavery, but rested (poorly) on theories of states’ rights. The war was fought largely by units that were raised by/from within the states. Not done after that.
Patrick McLaughlin (@mclpatrick.bsky.social) reply parent
IDK. Anyone familiar with the history of the US Civil War should know it. It’s laid out in the actions of the Virginians in the US Army as the war began. Gen. Winfield Scott saw his allegiance to the US as first. RE Lee opted for Virginia. Post-war, the issue’s resolved.
Patrick McLaughlin (@mclpatrick.bsky.social) reply parent
Used to be a real question, but the post-Civil War resolutions around state-federal authority, etc., tacked it down neatly. We’re citizens of the USA. We are *residents* of states (and after very short residencies, can be voters).

Won’t be a wildly popular answer (for some), but what works for me — and a lot of activists who’ve been at it for decades — is a progressive spiritual community. “Conservatism” has long been a project for *rule*, not for governance. And in the last 50+ years, it’s been rather explicitly trending towards authoritarianism. Trump just provides the (weird, I don’t get it) charisma for the project. And it menaces those who don’t capitulate, too.
