If we accept the idea that “elections have consequences,” it should be brutally obvious that “wars have consequences.” The CSA was about slavery, but rested (poorly) on theories of states’ rights. The war was fought largely by units that were raised by/from within the states. Not done after that.
IDK. Anyone familiar with the history of the US Civil War should know it. It’s laid out in the actions of the Virginians in the US Army as the war began. Gen. Winfield Scott saw his allegiance to the US as first. RE Lee opted for Virginia. Post-war, the issue’s resolved.
Used to be a real question, but the post-Civil War resolutions around state-federal authority, etc., tacked it down neatly. We’re citizens of the USA. We are *residents* of states (and after very short residencies, can be voters).
Won’t be a wildly popular answer (for some), but what works for me — and a lot of activists who’ve been at it for decades — is a progressive spiritual community. It feeds and reaffirms; it reminds them they’re not alone, and of their shared moral commitments. (& is a community for joy, fun, sorrow.)
“Conservatism” has long been a project for *rule*, not for governance. And in the last 50+ years, it’s been rather explicitly trending towards authoritarianism. Trump just provides the (weird, I don’t get it) charisma for the project. And it menaces those who don’t capitulate, too.
I’d not really heard him in an interview (I’m no where near NYC, so…). He’s really good. You’re right. Nat 20. And understands how to stay on message without being obnoxious. Dangerous!
