First big demo for the new gig at our company’s first ever all hands went awesomely. So satisfying to hit a home run my first at bat. 😊

Luca about as exhausted as I’ve ever seen him after day 4 of doggie daycare. It’s adorable. He’s almost grumpy about it.

Someday, science will focus on and solve the truly pressing challenges of humanity. By which I mean successfully laundering king size fitted sheets or duvet covers in the dryer without them regularly forming a ball with a density approaching that of a singularity.

The scars of those wars are real and still tender to the touch. Promote the tech you love. Shout from the rooftops why. I think the lesson of that decade was just don’t do it at the expense of the work of others.

A wish of mine is to not import the framework wars of the 2010s over to this site (or engage in them at all). Much like “the best camera is the one you have with you”, the best tech to use is what you know. If it doesn’t suit customer needs, then learn something new that does. It’s not zero sum.

Yup. This is the same mechanism that led to a lot of hand wringing around the display ads business a long time ago. Little profit so it’s sort of a web creator subsidy program. Justified because it was critical to search and the web. They are really pretty trapped here.

…and are likely desperately throwing everything ai at the wall to see what sticks and proves them worthy of not being subjected to further funding or headcount cuts. So the Gemini/deep kind stuff is sorta sensibly racing ahead, but legacy is flailing.

Knowledge of the inner workings of Google provide insight. There’s very much a divide between “legacy Google” (search, docs, etc) and “future Google (Gemini and deep mind). Those in the former are getting steadily squeezed for profit on what is viewed as a legacy business…

Business wise it very much threatens the web publishing ecosystem by making website click throughs less likely. They don’t profit much from display ads but that ecosystem is critical to the web and search. They are very trapped.

It’s such a tricky problem, both business & technically. LLMs are bad at deterministic things, and the overviews sorta tend to all be deterministic queries. Should be two different tools. Pretty sure right now it’s basically just an ad for AI and pure PR. While damaging its reputation for accuracy.

Fwiw, actual Gemini answers it fine. I believe the ai summaries thing is fairly different infra spawning from the old knowledge cards stuff in some way.

Based on your description, the movie you are most likely thinking of is the 2011 Hungarian film The Turin Horse (A torinói ló). Here's why it's a perfect match: * Black and White: The film is famously shot in stark, bleak black and white. * The Horse Dies: The plot revolves around an aging farmer, his daughter, and their horse. The horse is their only means of livelihood. A central conflict of the film is the horse's refusal to eat or move, and its slow, inevitable decline and eventual death. * The Well Dries Up: In addition to the horse's demise, a pivotal event in the film is the discovery that their well has completely dried up, sealing their grim fate and adding to the overwhelming sense of an impending apocalypse. Directed by Béla Tarr, The Turin Horse is a work of

I do wish the big llm companies would put even a modest amount of effort into teaching the basics of usage. Fairly sure the parts of this agent thread we aren’t seeing will show he made an (incorrect) assumption, asserted it to the llm, then asked it to explain. Hence hallucination.

Profile picture Matthew McNulty (@mcnulty.bsky.social) reply parent

I hate that I’m suddenly defending replit, about which I have *many* issues after extensive usage, but this guy’s critique is fairly absurd, imo. Dude doesn’t understand llm basics, also somehow misses replit’s maybe most prominent feature? (Checkpoints and easy rollbacks)

20/7/2025, 6:34:44 PM | 1 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Matthew McNulty (@mcnulty.bsky.social) reply parent

Where you’ll get no argument from me is that replit’s stated value prop of being able to create apps without coding knowledge is false in something like 99% of cases.

Profile picture Matthew McNulty (@mcnulty.bsky.social) reply parent

His failure to understand what he was doing across many many aspects of the tool he was using suggests a level of ignorance that no instructions will truly solve. Again, replit has issues for sure. But none of them are what he’s complaining about.

Profile picture Matthew McNulty (@mcnulty.bsky.social) reply parent

His lack of understanding there’s rollbacks is baffling. Literally at every single checkpoint there’s a prominent button in the main agent flow that says rollback to here and if you click that there’s a checkbox for also rollback database. 🤷‍♂️

I think if you’re using ai at this moment in time you should 100% have a basic understanding of how it works (and esp how it doesn’t). And the rollbacks and git integration are not at all hidden and are part of the default set of tools/tabs open with every project.

20/7/2025, 5:04:45 PM | 0 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Matthew McNulty (@mcnulty.bsky.social) reply parent

These tools still require an understanding of how LLMs work. He’s repeatedly making the classic blunder, accidentally asking it to reinforce his beliefs without realizing it will gladly do so even if not true. Replit has its issues, but also has great code and db rollbacks and full git integration.
