This was one of the funnest things I did when I taught an Organismal Diversity class. Watch sponges reassemble, grow ferns from spores, and annotate the anatomy of produce from the grocery store. Students love it, too.

Actinodendronid sea anemone, I think. These guys are common in the indo-west Pacific and tend to be zippy.... Common name is hellfire anemone

Emphasis on scientific superstars and personal power/rewards is greater in times of uncertainty. I get that from individual's point of view but fear that that does real damage in the long term to broad public support and the systems that make science *work*, like peer review, mentoring, etc

This is such an interesting thread. One thing that I've been trying to do to cope with *gestures* is to learn how other communities/eras have found resilience and persistence. The narrative of "science for the public good" is one reason we've had broad support. I wonder how that might change.

"Extinction of experience" in disciplines like ecology & paleobiology isn't just about fieldwork. It's also the loss of taxonomic expertise. Any focus on Big Data, divorced from knowledge of natural history, is a largely vacuous enterprise with limited capacity to generate meaningful insights. 🧪

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

As far as I understand it, they can abandon tubes and pop up elsewhere. They make the tube so it's not impossible for them to do this. Some true anemones that burrow (versus ceriantherians) have u-shaped burrows and will pop up in different places. Wild!

At least some tube anemones can pop up someplace nearby after contracting. Regular anemones can move (varies from rare to frequent). All move up down (expand/contract) and waggle the tentacles. I was mostly talking about the last bit--they often hunker down when feeding & digesting

I worry that the focus on NOAA's weather predicting value is ignoring the millions of other ways NOAA researchers enrich communities and local economies. There are no oysters without NOAA. There are no blue crabs without NOAA. NOAA trains teachers. NOAA is the lifeblood of coastal communities.
