Why commute on wheels when you could commute on water
samuel mehr (@mehr.nz) reply parent
Yes, the ferryposting continues
samuel mehr (@mehr.nz)
sometimes the early ferry is a little boat where the upstairs is just a deck with a couple benches, so I sit up there for a nice breeze
samuel mehr (@mehr.nz) reply parent
This is the way, even with multiple inboxes. I set myself a 3x weekly reminder to look and that's it

i like that these are super easy cleanup because the dough is pretty tight and dry so i just chuck it in the mixer for a few min to knead while making the rest of the meal

As a kid a family friend wrote for the Times book review and she asked me whether I'd read Harry Potter. I told her I didn't make it through the first book and that if she liked fantasy she should try Philip Pullman So she published a piece on the Golden Compass called "Harry Potter for Grown-ups"
samuel mehr (@mehr.nz) reply parent
Gorgeous, is this in the new Yorker? Don't think I've read
samuel mehr (@mehr.nz) reply parent
Anyway if you're making dinner to go with the pitas and are confortable with a stand mixer, it adds almost no prep time to make pitas fresh, you just knead and rise while cooking the rest and do the pitas last, just before the meal, and they're piping hot and gorgeous
samuel mehr (@mehr.nz) reply parent
She's amazing and somehow we ended up with JK Rowling instead of her :/

samuel mehr (@mehr.nz) reply parent
My pitas: 150ml warm milk 100ml warm water 3 tsp instant yeast 2 tsp sugar Let the yeast activate then add 350g flour 1.5 tsp kosher salt Knead for 8-9 min, let double in size in a warm oven (~45 min), divide into six balls, rest for 10 min, and then cook quickly on a very hot griddle Perfection
samuel mehr (@mehr.nz) reply parent
One thing is that if you cook really at all, then fresh pita takes such little effort to make, and is so so so so much better than packaged varieties, so you should just stop buying it altogether
samuel mehr (@mehr.nz)
I was craving middle eastern food, which is harder to get in Auckland than you might think, so I made some instead Jerusalem style chicken on fresh pita and cardamom rice, tahini, lemony minty chopped salad, tzatziki Yum

Seems like a good thing to avoid if one has other plumbing issues, or is on a house serviced by a septic tank rather than a sewer, but I use a garburetor constantly and haven't had any problems..... Not a plumber ofc
samuel mehr (@mehr.nz) reply parent
What's the concern exactly? There's typically quite easy access with an undersink trap for any clogs near the sink, and if there's a clog farther down the line that's with much larger pipes than an interior drain, so not much coffee grinds can do farther down unless you've a bigger problem to handle
samuel mehr (@mehr.nz) reply parent
Grounds in disposal, jug and mechanism taken apart and run in dishwasher, was always my go to. Shouldn't cause plumbing issues at this scale unless there's a ton of hard grease in wastewater pipes (a problem anyway, if it's there)

samuel mehr (@mehr.nz) reply parent
My constant gripe about cognitive science is that we study vision, action & haptics, sound, olfaction, and taste, in exactly that order and with fleetingly few labs and people as the list proceeds. So I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there are low hanging fruit of ideas to test on taste & smell

iirc the water/fluid one we had at 899 Main St had a bigass condenser in the back of the building, and the air cooled one looked like an ordinary AC-sized hvac looking unit. I think it was just way more efficient bc the old one was ancient. This was a decently sized machine, 40qt

I imagine they're all heat pump machines now or similar

samuel mehr (@mehr.nz) reply parent
an enormous number of journal articles were published before LLMs existed so publication agreements with authors can't have addressed AI use specifically. unclear whether this matters given copyright transfer, but I could imagine a suit about it, seeing as pub agreements aren't unlimited in scope
