And Albertans got justifiably angry. Regardless of which party they vote for, most of us understand that you have to apply policy fairly. Most of us don't like censorship. Most of us value books and want youth to have freedom to read. Most of us are not the hateful people the UCP thinks we are.
Bridget Stirling (@bridgetstirling.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
You cannot expect people to wait until sometime in September to see if the ministry will provide a clear list. They went ahead, not out of malicious compliance but out of a genuine need to have something ready for schools to weed their libraries and teachers their classroom collections by October 1.
Bridget Stirling (@bridgetstirling.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
And then they dropped the ministerial order on school divisions in early July, during the summer break, with an expectation that all non-compliant books would be pulled by October 1. Without a provincial list, divisions had to make their best guess and quite reasonably erred on the side of caution.
Bridget Stirling (@bridgetstirling.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
This is what happens when governments make policy on the fly based in on something the premier said to please their base. It turns out that 11 days of consultation followed by less than a month of policy development resulted in a ministerial order that didn't do what the minister expected.
Bridget Stirling (@bridgetstirling.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
Notably, all the examples of "explicit sexual content" the government provided were from 2SLGBTQ+ books. This suggests that their intent was to ban this content specifically and that they expected school divisions to apply the order only to certain kinds of books.
Bridget Stirling (@bridgetstirling.bsky.social) reposted
I suspect they discovered that many conservative voters also disagree with book bans. They also realized that school divisions were not going to interpret "sexual content" to mean only 2SLGBTQ+ content. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Sigh. ▪︎ Alberta government couldn't even find a moment of humility and say they put out a flawed, broad coverage ministerial order that resulted in long lists of banned books with some libraries closing altogether. ▪︎ Still won't say they're targeting four (or more) specific books by queer authors.
