As @peterhotezmdphd.bsky.social & I document in great detail in #ScienceUnderSiege (due out 9/9: www.barnesandnoble.com/w/science-un...), the New York Times is very much implicated in the false balance and "performative neutrality" that has enabled this moment. Here's a brief excerpt from the book:

excerpt from book: The other side is actively doing all of this. They have cultivated a stable of well- trained, articulate, charismatic individuals with seemingly impressive credentials. They get them on cable television and talk shows and place their commentaries in leading news outlets. They work with an array of conservative celebrities and influencers to amplify their messaging on social media. And mainstream media organizations compromised by performative neutrality happily serve as enablers of it all. Look no further than the New York Times’s recent embrace of COVID antiscience on their opinion pages in the form of commentaries by nonexpert but authoritative- sounding Ivy League– credentialed individuals. We need our own stable of (actual) experts who are willing and able to write for and speak to popular audiences. We furthermore need buy- in from science- forward organizations and institutions willing to provide resources to train such a cadre and help them get their message out. And we need help from influencers and opinion leaders who can amplify the message using their formidable platforms.

“Once upon a time, scientists could assume that people would take their hard work, believe it, and put it to use. No longer—as Michael Mann and Peter Hotez make painfully clear, a concentrated assault by special interests has made the work of science painful and perilous. Science Under Siege is a well-researched guide and offers some powerful ideas about how to fight back.”―Bill McKibben, author of Here Comes the Sun

When fossil fuel disinformation dons a cowboy hat & rides into prime time, what appears to be narrative is, in truth, engineered inertia. If Taylor Sheridan & Paramount are laundering industry agendas through prestige drama, then Billy Bob Thornton & Jon Hamm aren’t just acting—they’re amplifying.
